that was it, SIP set up. So focused on the DECT being the issue I did not manage to take my mind out to another area of programming...

Good call, it was on in the user rights group.
I copied the group, removed preset buttons, took out that option just in case as it sounded like a 'maybe'.
Added my test extension to that new group.
Same result.

The DECT handsets are members of the same user rights group as the other IP deskphones.
They follow the same routing.
The number can be dialled by the deskphones.
The trace shows the dial string to the SIP Trunk. It looks the same as the others, number dialled @ BTSIP-HIPCOM blah.

DECT R4 units from older system.
All connected up ok, can receive calls, can make internal calls.
But making an external call the phone comes up with 'incompatible' on the screen.
They have BT HIPCOM SIP trunks.

Have you seen the license changes for V8.1 and the server scenarios for multi-sites.
