    Problems with HOSTS file

What are you pinging? ibm.com or www.ibm.com? It makes a difference.

    Can ping but not surf!

Try a different browser. It sounds as if IE has some malware connected to it. I had something similar on a client PC that took me quite a while ot locate. Since it only happens when using IE and you can resolve DNS names via ping, I'd suspect some malicious BHO has been installed.

how can i list the current port usage/assignment

You could just use netstat with the appropriate switches, but there is also Port Reporter from Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=837243 Is that what you're looking for?

Plugging the security hole in Windows Help

We are working on a GPO to lock down a system so that the user can only launch one application. Unfortunately, we can't run the app as the shell because it bombs out (vendor has no idea why) We also have to run the application with the user logged in as a local administrator (once again, vendor...

EFS Data Recovery Agent - How do I do this?

I am becoming more and more displeased with MS's EFS system. They state there is a way to do this recovery, but I can't figure out how to. This user encrypted his files on his own without our knowledge, but that should not be an issue in an AD environment. This, combined with the way they broke...

EFS Data Recovery Agent - How do I do this?

I have a user who's laptop drive went bad. We can access the file system by plugging into another PC, but the My Doc's folder is encrypted. How do I recover them? It is a domain account and I am a domain admin, but I can't figure out how to import the private key to do the decryption. Article...

Excel Attachment won't open or save

I ended up deleting all files in the folder identifed by the OutlookSecureTempFolder which is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security This could be different for each client so you will need to look at the value that is there.

Excel Attachment won't open or save

I have someone who can not open an xls attachment in an email. It is only one file with a specific file name. If I send the file renamed, but still with an xls extension, it opens fine. The error message indicates a permissions problem, but no other attachments, excel or otherwise, have this...

    Web Page access

I have a user that can't type data into a form on a web page. He is able to copy and paste into the same fields, though. Typing doesn't do anything, though. The cursor just sits there and blinks. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I think I've seen it before, but I can't remember what I had to...

Not the right forum, but I have a problem resetting a password

We have an AD 2003 environment here and are in the process of migrating our desktops from 98 to XP. To do it, we reset the user's passwords and migrate the data from the old PC to the new PC with thier profile already set up which requires us to change thier password and log in as them. I have...

    SUS client group policy settings

SUS doesn't work like Windows Update. It works in the background so there is no web page to vist for updates. The only web page you can access is the administrative SUS page. Of course, that makes it frustrating while you wait to see if the automated updates work.

    Processor at 100%

It could be legitimate software pegging the proc, too. The McAfee framework service has a bad reputation for doing that when trying to run an update that it is having trouble completing. EPO 3 sp2a fixes this very issue.

    automatic updates

I'm assuming it's a workgroup and you can't set up a SUS server locally for them. Even if you schedule the install, windows uses a random timer to check for updates. I don't know of any way around it, but I have not really looked either.

    Security Policies

It's likely a custom mmc console set up by someone. Reinstallation will not put it there. You should consider managing security policies at the domain level if possible.

VLOOKUP Differences between 200 and 2003

After further investigation, we have found that the user has a vbs script that runs against an access database to import the data into the spreadsheet. The database was written in Access 2000, which is the more likely source of the issue.
