Hi There Chapps,

Have had this problem before but cannot figure out how i solved it.

Have a win XP client with SP2 - I am connected to my BT broadband using the usual USB modem.

I get my connection no problem using the dial-up style interface to log-in, i can then ping external address from CMD using the IP and the DNS name, however i am unable to browse sites, or connect to MSN and things like that.

Any suggestions? ... i have re-installed IE and also checked the settings for the connection and they all appear to be fine!

Thanks,

Rob

What about email, chat clients, other internet type software? Is everything working but your web browser, or is pinging the only thing you can do? Or something in between?

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.

hm ... well the chat service like windows messenger and MSN messenger wont login.

I have turned on automatic updates to see if they are going to dowload ... will just have to wait and see.

Problem is i am working on this system over the phone untill i can get remotly connected to it ... there is all sorts of junk installed on it ... so might be a personal firewall that doesnt like SP2 or somthing.

I will have to worm my way through the Add/Remove programs pannel and see what i can find.

Thanks for your help chaps .. keep posting any other tip bits you have ... i can then set about it with a full armoury of solutions.

Thanks, Rob

Try a different browser. It sounds as if IE has some malware connected to it. I had something similar on a client PC that took me quite a while ot locate.

Since it only happens when using IE and you can resolve DNS names via ping, I'd suspect some malicious BHO has been installed.
