4 pc network running windows xp pro and an isdn router. Large phone bill.
if windows AU is set to notify of updates. how often will au cause the router to dial out? if person cancels the popup, when and how ofter will it cause router to dial out again.
If AU scheduled to download once a week and again person cancels the download again when and how often will it cause the router to dial out.

i have come across on one of the windows 98 updates that it puts in a schedule to check updates every 5 mins causing the router to dial out every 5 mins.

We cannot know when your system will or will not dial.
If it says once a week, it will be once a week, starting the last time or the last cancel.

If you are on a dial-up, you should DISABLE the automatic updates, and keep track of it manually.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you paying a "flat-rate" for ISDN? I have 8 or 9 clients who use ISDN (all in different parts of the world) and they all pay a monthly fee (it's always the same each month but different for each client).

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!

These aren't my pc's.
They are on flat rate but they don’t switch off the computers at night so pc's on 24/7.
If I switch off the automatic updates, I know the owners won’t do the updates themselves, therefore if they do get a worm it’s my fault.
At least if I have the notify coming up, they don’t bother updating and they get a worm at least I can say that they were notified of updates and if they had downloaded them they would not have gotten the worm.

Do u see the relevance to my question now?

If ISDN is a flat monthly rate, it won't make any difference whether the PC's are on or off. The fee is for the connection to ISDN and not for the hours/minutes used. Your original post indicated high telephone bills - your client should be looking at their long distance charges (assuming they're in the US) or their total TELEPHONE minutes used. Assuming their phone service is also supplying ISDN then it'll be easy to figure out.

Just a thought, and this will be easy to do, check to see if any of these PC's are using dail-up to access an ISP. Or better yet, remove any dial-up connections - that will take care of that end. A periodic check for any new dial-up connections may answer the telephone bill thing...

I'm assuming it's a workgroup and you can't set up a SUS server locally for them.

Even if you schedule the install, windows uses a random timer to check for updates. I don't know of any way around it, but I have not really looked either.

sorry should have made myself clearer. its ireland the little backwared country that where flat rate is €x for 180 hrs a month etc. dont even mention going adsl thats like looking for the yeti. the people who hold the lines here dont have to provide adsl lines. the lines dont even have be able for 56k dialup, only voice.

there are no dialups on the pc's. i checked for anti virus's going out every 5 mins etc they are set to check once a day. its a workgroup.
