Hello everyone,

I have a question for you.

Does anyone know why text wouldn't wrap in a cell even after "Wrap text" is checked and Format -> Row -> Autofit is applied?

Thanks you in advance.

Before selecting Row > Autofit, did you make sure that the particular row you wanted to affect was selected? Either click in a cell in that row or select all cells (either [Ctrl]+[A] or click in the box above "a" and to the left of "A").

And for future reference, this question should have been posted in forum68, Microsoft: Office Forum since it doesn't concern VBA.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply.
Well, I did make sure the row was selected. Actually, text wraps just fine except for the last line of it. And no matter how wide I make the column , there's still some text, that was not wrapped. When I double click in that cell, though, then it's wrapping OK.

What do you think? Thanks.

Is this a merged cell?

Nope. Just a regular(?) one.

Ya' got me. I've seen this kind of behavior in merged cells, but if that is not the case, then I'm stumped.

Sorry.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Gotta be merged.....that is the only cause of this behaviour (other than forced by code) that I have seen - select the cell and look under Format>Cells>Alignment - what is shown under "merged" ?

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

Hello guys,

Sorry for the late response - left for the day by the time of the last message.
Geoff, thanks for reply.
This cell is not merged. I checked that before posting my question. I wrote an application that would batch-process a bunch of Excel files: format them before printing - converting to TIFF images - and eliminate pages, that don't contain any information in the cells, and while checking output I'd come across quite a few TIFFs, where the text was visually cut-off in the some of the cells. So I started analyzing original Excel files and here I am. I really have no idea what's with these files. I tried formatting them on different machines, but with the same results.
Any ideas?

Thank you.
Sergey.

ok - fair dos - what version of excel ?
can you give an example of the text that will not wrap ?
what alignment is it ?
what font is it ?
what size font is it ?
is it pure text or text and a formula ?
Using the LEN() formula, what is the number of characters in that cell ?

Any other info that you think might be useful ?

1.I tried it on Excel 2000, 2003, XP.
2.Alignment is "General"
3.Original font is Lucida Sans Unicode 10. I tried to change the font face and size, but results are pretty much the same: last line wouldn't wrap.
4.It's a text with no formulas
5.Length of the contents of this particular cell - there are others - is 1294 characters.

Below please find copied and pasted text from that cell

Code:
7/30: Lisa and Graham to meet this afternoon and agree on next steps. 8/01: Lisa to send spreadsheet of all 175 clients to Gerry sorted by site. Gerry to prioritize list according to clients that have reported servicing issues. The spreadsheet is to be be sent to ABN site managers and Key IPS to schedule client calls to discuss standing instructions and servicing issues. Next Team meeting is scheduled for 8/8 at 11am ET in lieu of the servicing issues call. 8/7: Take the top 175 clients processed across 4 sites, checkpoint call and review SI to make sure they are complete and accurate. 8/14:Lisa to send to IPS/Key Bank Sales to prioritize. 8/16: Assign TSR to top customers concurrently w/ this task. 8/20: Update spreadsheet & send to Dave Verhotz. Verify what names need to receive joint calls (target Labor Day). 8/21: Jacque & Sandy to discuss Exception Pricing spreadsheet sent to Key on 8/17. 8/24: Dave will have list of clients needed to have joint calls with by 8/29. 8/29: East Region still work in progress. West Coast Region discovering the data is up to date, but the process in which the Access Database is updated needs to be investigated. Exception pricing discussion has taken place. 8/31: Make sure (1) validated info is correct and (2) presentation is correct.

So please, take a look. I hope you'll find something that would solve that mistery.

Thanks.

Sergey.

unfortunately for you, the bit that solves it is:

5.Length of the contents of this particular cell - there are others - is 1294 characters.

only 1,024 will display in the cell itself (excel technical specifications) - that infers that excel has a graphical limit as to how many seperate characters it can show in a cell - thus the word wrap will not take into account any characters that cannot be shown in a cell - hence your issue

All characters will display in the formula bar but that (I would imagine) doesn't really help

Sorry but it looks like you've just hit an Excel limitation - only thing I can think of would be some kind of VBA function to figure out how many lines would be needed and then set the rowheight based on that - pretty tricky though as you would need to take into account both the no. of characters and the width of the cell....

Ah. From Excel's help file (search for Worksheet and workbook specifications):

Excel_help said:
Feature:[tab]Length of cell contents (text)
Maximum limit:[tab]32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar.

Lucky me, huh?

OK guys, thanks a lot for all your help.
And sorry for wasting your time when I could do just the same thing - open Help and check for Excel limitations.

Thanks again and have a great day.

Sergey.

don't worry 'bout it - you have to know what to search for before you can find it ! you actually have to search for "specification" which isn't particularly obvious - the quickest way to get to it is to search on "spec"

Actually, searching for 'limitations' will find it as well. That seems a little more intuitive to me.
