Our students have an email account and we want them to use Outlook. Yet at present the system appears to default to a PST file rather than attach directly to the mailbox. We are using Outlook XP with Windows XP for clients and Windows 2000 SP3 servers; one being our Exchange Server. All users are contained within Active Directory.

Short of using a PRF, how can I force the system to simply direct the user straight to their mailbox and not to want to start a PST file off everytime?

I don't quite see what you are getting at. If the profile is set to use the Mailbox, it will not change that.
Unless you have a wrong profile set as default?

I think this is probably the issue. We have not set the roaming profiles in anyway relating to Exchange and Outlook - how could you?

I am also now aware that the PST files are needed for all parts of Outlook to work (though I had thought Microsoft wanted to move away from PSTs over networks due to congestion). Therefore, how do I set each user's profile to create a PST but have this download their emails from the correct email box? I can work with Windows 2000, 2003, NT and any other aspect of networking. But Exchange leaves me confused and lost! Help me?!

huh.. you are not the only one confused...

If you setup the Outlook profile to use Exchange Server, AND the delivery options to Mailbox, then there is no need for a PST at all.

Yes, but how do you set up the Outlook Profile to use Exchange Server and the delivery options to Mailbox without having to get each user to do this?

At present our users get the setup process of Outlook and they always get it wrong. With 1100 users we can't catch each and every one of them. I want to have it so that it is set up ready for any user.

have a look at the bottom of thread858-744744

The trouble with PRFs is that they either have to be run by the user, and when you have Outlook on the desktop this will bypass the PRF; or else you run it at startup and Outlook opens straight away - not something you want when starting a class.

I need something that we do at account creation or do to the account that will simply set Outlook correctly.

We now do have OWA in place but this Outlook thing is bugging me - it must be possible!

It is possible, but it has to be done with Policies, Profiles and scripting, but I have not yet made it work decently.
