Login to Outlook 2000 it ask for a windows NT login

In my office we recently had to recreate our exchange 5.5 server on a windows 2000 server. For some reason whenever anyone logs into outlook it asks for a windows nt password, domain, and user account. About half of the users on the network can login fine using their network login password and user account name however for some of the users their network login passwords are not accepted. If anyone could help me figure out how to correct this problem It would be appreciated.

P.S. Currently to get around this I have been rebooting the exchange server and this seems to allow users to open outlook without prompting for this information. It seems to last for about a few hours and then begins prompting agian for this NT login window.

Check your eventlog and licensing on the server, sounds like exchange is running out of licenses. The solution is out there.

I have seen this before, I can't put my finger on it, as far as I remember some keys were missing in the registry.

Search for it on the Internet, you'll find it.

Check the Authentication settings in your Exchange Properties on the outlook client.

Outlook/Properties
Exchange Server/Properties
Advanced - at the bottom is an "Authentication Type" option called Logon Network Security

If this is set to NONE you get the Prompt for usernames, passwords, domain. Set this to NT Authentication.

I have set this to NT Authentication but it still brings up the login box. I am still looking for reg settings.
I just don't understand because if I reboot the server the box fails to open upon login. However, a few hours down the road it start popping up.

Open Exchange admin.
Make sure that the Primary Windows Logon Account is set to the users name.

I rebooted the server this morning it let everyone in. However on the PDC I change my user account and then changed the primary windows nt logon box to that changed account. When I logged off and relogged (from my desktop PC)onto outlook the password box popped up. It would not accept my network login password. Could this be a matter of user account permissions and or comunication issues from the PDC to the exchange server.

I forgot the bizzare peice to the puzzle is the administrator logon information will logon to the excahnge mailbox.

Hmmm, Could be sync issue with the PDC and Exchange Server.
Try resyncing the Entire Domain.
Logoff your computer and login.

Does anyone know if this could be a mailbox/exchange permission issue. The admin information will allow users access to their mailboxes but outlook will not accept any user account information or passwords.

I have been trying everything and I just can't seem to find the answer.

Make sure that the user accounts in question are not locked out. If they are, unlock them and have the user try to access outlook once more. If this is the case, you now need to know why the user accounts are getting locked out on such a regular basis. Good luck.

This sounds to me more like a network connection timeout issue, than an issue with Exchange. Try the following on both the PDC and the Exchange servers.

Edit the registry on both file servers. Navigate to

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

and set the Reg_DWord hex value of
"autodisconnect"=ffffffff

If "autodisconnect" doesn't exist, Add it.

This will set the servers to never disconnect.

You will then need to reboot both file servers.

Thanks for not forgetting me. This is still an issue and I have done just about everything I can think of. I will try anything right about now. Now the password dalog box pops up on every client machine. If the server is rebooted it clears the issue for an unspecified time. So I reboot the machine first thing in the am and people can login with no trouble. The password box then decides to pop up on all machines anywhere from lunch time to 2:00 or 3:00, sometimes even later. If I reboot exchange it clears it again. Please if anyone has any more ideas I am willing to try just about anything. I will let you know what happens with the new registry settings.

I have seen this b4.

if you delete the mailbox that has problems then re-create it, the problem still occurs!!! The only way to erradicate this, that I know of is to change the name of the mailbox (not ideal) but I stuck a . in after the first & last name.

This worked ok for me.

I never found anything else that would work but I think it is a problem with the pri.edb.

I have check licensing, the problem starts on all mailboxes. It is unusual because if the admin account and password is outlook will logon to the mailbox. The exchange 5.5 machine is a new server in the domain due to failure on the part of the old server. I will try recreating the mail boxes with a diferent name. This may be the answer.

Alright the first event log error is a failure Audit, Source:MSEchangeIS Private, Event ID 1023. Description:
XWC\cnewman was validated as /o=domain.com/ou=mail/cn=Recipients/cn=cnewman but was unable to log on to /o=domain.com/ou=caesar/cn=recipients/cn=sadf.

I have researched this error and for that MBclean is running on the server where mailboxes are not located.

Second error which I belive to be the problem is another failure audit event id 529. User NT Authority\system
Logon Failure: reason:unknown user name or password
logon type: 3 logon process NtLmSsp Authentication package:NTLM

The only user account that authenticated is the Admin account. All other user accounts fail. I have been over and over this issue and really haven't been able to come up with a soultion. I have been over just about every article on Microsofts site
Let me know if this helps.
I am currently going to try and delete my mailbox out and reassign a new on with a different MB name. I will let you know how it goes.
