Hi All,

I have a network with 1 Win2k Advanced Server and 1 Windows NT Server. We want the WinNT server to operate strictly for FTP services. We also have a SonicWall internet device thingy. I've setup the WinNT server for ftp service and it works fine when accessing the ftp site locally. I have setup the SonicWall to forward ftp requests to the WinNT Server by entering the WinNT servers address in the the FTP service in the SonicWall setup. Problem is that when I try to access the ftp site using our Internet IP Address the connection doesn't go through. I'm wondering if the WAN Subnet must match the LAN Subnet, this is not currently done. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Aloha,

James

You could run netmon on the NT4 box to see if it is getting any traffic at all. FTP uses ports 20 AND 21, I don't know about sonic, but on my router I have to configure the ports. Also your router may not support a 'looped' connection with NAT. Try the connection from somewhere else.

Thanks for your advice. It does work from other locations, apparently everywhere but here. Which made my email into our ISP's customer support look really stupid. Anyhow, I need to make changes to our ftp site (client logons and such) and want to test the service before actually sending them out to our clients. Do you know of any way to do this given that I can't access our ftp from here?

Aloha,

James

If you can access your ftp server internally and not externally Id concentrate more on your SonicWall than the server.

But from your post it seems you are internal and trying to access the external address of the firwall to access the ftp site *for testing*. This is true in most cases. Internal clients cant usually connect to their own firewalls external address. As isguyatlanta stated it probably just isnt accepting a looped connection.

The way I do this is I have another 2K box on the outside of my firewall (another DMZ actually) that I use to terminal serve into and test connections of that sort.

But if you know it already works from the outside I wouldnt sweat it too much.

Thanks... It appears that if I access it from behind the firewall using the ip of the server it works just as if I were outside coming in. I think this works for my purposes, just posting to maybe give others ideas or work arounds.

Again thanks for all your input.

Aloha,

James
