Every time I start up my pc I get an error window that says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A:" I have googled this error message and I get repairs for "There is no disk in the drive Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR5" Which has nothing to do with my problem. I did find one thing awhile back that stated that it had to do with quicktime, and for me to clean out the history on it and disable start up and it worked for a day. Now I am still getting same window and quicktime is not on start up. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to follow my last piece of advice, one more as it is tough to get QuickTimes without iTunes anymore.

on the right hand side in the center section, there is a link (not colored blue, but it's a link) to "QuickTime Standalone Installer". That gets you QT without iTunes.

I don't know if you mentioned this already but what happens if you put a blank (write allowed) floppy in the drive?

Is there any new error message.

Conversely, what happens if you Disable the Floppy Disk Drive in Device Manager?

I havent tried to install a blank floppy let me try to install one and I will get back to you.

Ok here are the results, I started up my machine and as it was booting up I put in a disk and I didnt get the error prompt. So I restarted it again this time without the floppy in and I got the error, I then inserted the disk again and clicked retry and it was gone. Nothing opens up it just kinda makes sure there is a disk in there and when there is it doesnt run it or open it up. The disk I used was a 98 boot up disk (thats the only one I had) and I did have the boot from floppy disabled. (Just a reminder I am running XP home not 98).

Hope I did it right!!

Earlier up the post I mentioned several clean booting MSKB articles. Using these in conjunction with the fact that this problem does not occur in Safe Mode may be your best way of isolating the cause of your problem.

The difference between Safe Mode and what you can isolate via those articles are the loading drivers.

This article will help you check for unsigned drivers.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Name: HideFilesAndFolders_S
Description:
Startup Mode: Auto
Run from: C:\WINDOWS\System32\hffsrv.exe"

Did you ever use this utility to "hide" a file on a floppy disk? That would be the first thing I would try disabling.

Nothing else listed jumps out at me....

no I use it to hide payroll reports and such but nothing in drive A

have you tried clearing the recent documents list (AKA the MRU list)? It might be as simple as once having opened or saved a file to the A: drive in an application - and the history list points to that file (similar to quicktime problem but related to windows instead of a specific program).

This is the path I believe in essence, as well as clean-boot configurations, that linney is trying to get us to follow, and it sounds as the most likely cause if no program or device driver is the cause.

see this thread re: MRUs --

jimp56 and bcastner you guys were right on. I tried that Ramesh's MRU cleaner and it worked like a charm. My problem fixed. I scaned it and I didnt see anything pointing towards drive A: but I clicked on clean anyways and problem solved. Thanks everybody for your help.

Ok guys problem is back again and I have a question about that MRU cleaner I used. Now my start menu has all of its icons gone. You know the most recently used programs, I do have it set to show my last 6 programs, and I notice that my address bar history is always clear after I boot up. All this started after I used the MRU. Is there anyway to fix that?

Are you using MRU-Blaster in your Scheduled Tasks?

System Restore might help too.

Is MRU-Blaster configurable as to what Registry settings it applies to?

Is the exact Error message involving the Floppy Disk appearing again?

You could have a look at what this program can do and see if you can track down the owning process of the window and error message.

yes the same floppy disk error is popping out again.

Did you ever try this earlier suggestion?

"Conversely, what happens if you Disable the Floppy Disk Drive in Device Manager?"

Does that result in anything different happening, message-wise?

Let me try that I really dont need the floppy drive so I will see if that works. Also I did a hijack this and noticed that MRU blaster was running in the registry I disabled it so maybe that will fix my history problem and start menu icon issue. I will try it and post the results. Thanks!!

These are only semi-related articles but I wonder if cleaning out the PreFetch folder might help?

Ok I disabled the floppy in the device manager and since I disabled the MRU in hijack this Icons are starting to appear in my start menu. THanks again for your help.
