you'll want to set up a static pagefile (prevents file fragmentation) by setting both the initial size and the maximum size to the same value. for starters set it at 1.5 x ram, in your case 768 mb. you only need one pagefile. i'll post more info if you need it.

at first i was skeptical because of the reputation that preceded win xp and micro$oft in general, but . . . i've been running xp home oem on my new custom built machine for 8 months now, not a single bsod. a couple of boo-boos on my part caused me to have to use the system restore function...

if you want to continue using messenger but don't want it running all the time try this: open messenger. then click tools> options> preferences tab. uncheck the three boxes in the "general" section. click ok and close messenger. it won't come back on start-up.

i had the same problem a while back. i was behind a firewall and had to configure it to allow ftp.

does anyone know anything about route.exe? all i can find out about it is that it's a system 32 application that runs from a prefetch routine. if i don't get on the internet immediately after power-up or restart this rascal will run for about 10 seconds (using 100% cpu) about every minute...

control panel>> internet options> connections tab. change setting to "never dial a connection". hope this helps.
