Dear Anyone.

I have XP and 98 as a dual boot system. I wish I hadn't installed XP now, I can't stand it - it crashes more often than a blind man in a destruction derby (which is what software can resemble by the time it's finished with it!!) it isn't backwardly compatible with 98 software (I know it's got emulator modes, but they're useless - for instance, I've got Lotus suite Millennium and the emulator runs the spreadsheet and the database, but WONT run the word processor for love nor money! The same goes for all my other software - VERY hit and miss.

Anyway.

The prob. is, I can't download. I'm on the Net, I have no firewall on and all my security's on low, and every time I try to download, or stream audio, or listen to MP3's, or do anything remotely similar to the above, I get the following error message.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

And I'm SITTING on the site, LOOKING at what I'm trying to download, and the system STILL can't find it!!??!!

Is this a known problem with XP (one of the many hundreds, considering all the patches I'm asked to download every evening - which of course I can't download....)

The odd thing is, that I can still download E-mails and their attachments. Like.... you could E-mail me an MP3 (for instance) and I could download it. But I couldn't download the same MP3 from its website!!

Please - any ideas? I'm completely out - I've tried all the settings I can think of anywhere in the system, and still zilch luck.

XP isn't a virus - it's a one program disease!! The only reason I'm keeping it at all is that ever since I've had it, 98 has been unable to find my modem!! I've reinstalled it into 98 (NOT into XP!) several times, but 98 still doesn't believe I have one. If you can tell me how to make 98 believe I've got a modem again, XP will be into the nearest skip at warpspeed.

Yours in pure frustration

Chris

Have you tried downloading the same file on Windows 98? Try downloading from a source that is usually working. Aol.com, download.com, or netscape.com. If you can verify that it's only windows xp then try a different browser. Netscape or Mozilla ( ask a friend to download it for ya ). If it still wont download then i'd say someone or something messed up your registry. As for the programs not working I wish i had the same program to try. Make sure there are no patches on the manufacturers website. The part about it crashing really makes me worry about your registry. It's usally either that or a heat problem, and sometimes a hardware/driver conflict. Try looking for upgraded drivers. There may be a registry checking utility but I personally don't know of any. Anyone else feel free to correct me/point out software.

1. TURNOFF THE FIREWALL: probably cause u never read all about XP. Ever version of XP by default turnons the "BUILTIN FIREWALL".
2. XP is the most stable of all the X86 platforms. bar none.
now rememer i said X86 platform. No NT
3. In-stability in XP is cause by LOADING AND(trying to) USING UNSIGNED DRIVERS. check all your drivers (remove all unsigned) and let XP install SIGNED drivers and the problem(s) will go away. honest.
4. make sure (you never said) that Win98xx and XP are not installed on the same partition.
5. Install all older versions of any software Games included: then use the compability mode. ps: XP had DOS also.
6. I run ever thing in Lotus from Win95 thru Lotus ME every ting works 100% in Lotus
7. Please send my your (CD) version of XP with the included Product # that way i know its NOT BOOTLEGGED. and I will tell you 100% how to make win98ME accept your modem again..
pss: I NEED TO KNOW what modem u have also.
8. Honest beta tester from the 1st. XP is the only way to go. PS: I gave all my other original(CD's) with Product #'s away. to other ppl..

XP is the best operating system Microsoft ever made, I know I have had them all. So that only leaves a problem with your specific machine. If you have installed over Win98 then you may have driver problems. I`d back my stuff up and Start afresh, Boot from XP disk (need to change boot priorities in BIOS)Partition\format the drive...windows will take it from there almost. Sometimes I think people expect miricles. Do it right you should n`t have a problem...might need to update to some XP drivers once you have it running...no big deal. :) If your unsure....Dont do it!
