(Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

Hi all,
I am hoping some kind soul might be able to help me here.

Many years ago, was given a BT Marquis system which I learned how to setup and wire in my home as a hobby. Gave great years service until lightening blue alarm box next to Marquis CCU and took the Marquis out with it. So bought A Nortel Meridian 6+16 which I also managed to wire up correctly which has given me 5 years good service but no longer is able to hold memory.

So, I now have a Compact Plus which I have wired up mostly, but I have two questions I was hoping someone could help with.

1.) Where do I wire up the outside lines. There is no helpful markings on the Krone or circuit board like there was on the 6+16 which helpfully said Line 1, Line 2 etc. I have four to connect.

2.) Ext 222 and Ext 223 Say not in use when they are dialed event though they are connected up. Is that a software setup issue to disconnect extensions or more likely I have a wiring error?

Any help with these items, especially 1 would be massively appreciated!!

Many thanks,

Ben.

RE: (Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

I suggest you download an Installation manual.

The lines go on the 2nd amphenol connector cable.
Line 1 on the 1st pair, Line 2 on the 2nd, line 3 on the 5th pair, line 4 on the 6th pair. (Use 2 pairs, skip 2 pairs, use the next 2 pairs, etc)

For your sets, they go on the 1st amphenol connector cable, pairs 1 through 16. If 222 is on pair 2 and 223 is on pair 3, then go to each set and do: "Feature * 0" and press the intercom button on each set. It will 1st tell you the extension number, then hit the # button and it will tell you the port number (pair).

Hi Mooretel, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I think this being UK market model maybe different unless I am not understanding you. There is no Amphenol connector cables with the UK ones, in their place there is a module fitted to those two slots where the amphenol connectors would go. I have all the extensions connected now, but the line 1 etc. is not marked as such.

RE: (Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

Try this and please update this thread when your done to confirm.

Looking at it sideways with the left side being the bottom.

|||||||||||||||| (229 - 236 _____||||||||||||||||
|||||||||||||||| (221 - 228)_____||||||||||||||||Lines 5-8

It might be possible that port 102 and 103 are bad on the wiring adapter, try re-punching.

Thank you very much. I think I maybe being deeply stupid!! Is your graphic, my board turned 90 degrees clockwise? Sorry but just want to make doubly sure I am understanding. And the connection for lines 1 to 4 lies straight under where you have written 'Lines 1-4'? Sorry again for being so slow,

Ignore that last message! I hope that graphic changed or I am going deeply mad!!! :)

RE: (Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

It changed a little but yes to the question.

Thank you very much for your help. It would indeed seem that port 102 and 103 have gone bad. When connected to that I get no dial tone but, when I move the lines up to line 2 it is fine. I will go and try line 3 and 4. I am guessing it is the adapter ports like you say? Would not be the line card? Too much to hope for I guess. Thank you again for your help.

RE: (Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

Well you said sets 222 and 223 are dead, if lines also then maybe the ICTU adapter board is fading or not seated properly .
Lines do not go on 102 or 103, did you typo?
It is best to test with a 25 pair amp cable direct to the Commander with a Krone wafer (or termination block) on the end as that will test if it's the Commander ports or the ICTU adapter board.
You could also test the line card by moving it to the other slot and re-terminate the lines to bottom Krone, the program lines 5 to 8 on the set.

Thank you again Curlycord, been having an hour off. All done. For some reason CO line 1 terminates to 3 on the top left Krone, and line 2 on 2 of the same Krone. If I misunderstood you, apologies. But it is all working now. Both lines and 9 extensions! Happy days. The reason extn 222 and 223 were not working was because I had not punched the wires down well enough. Thank you again very much for your time and help! Very much appreciated ! Cheers, Ben.

RE: (Solved!) Wiring advice for Norstar Compact plus (UK) version 3 please. (Solved!)

Good old Marquis system?. Gosh, that rings a bell from many many moons ago when we didn't have computers. One of the early systems that used 0 & 1 as the programming input.
Anyway, I have attached the UK Norstar Compact plus guide that I think contains the wiring codes. These systems cam in two types. One used viking connectors that went to a Box Conn and you had one cable for extensions and one for the trunks.
The later type had an connector that was mounted staright onto the system and also had two krone strips. The numbering was based on lines 001 to 004 or 01 to 04 for the first 4 port analogue trunk module and then lines 031 to 034 or 31 to 34 for the second 4 port analogue trunk module. I recall that the line positions appeared in different ports on the krone strip. I think some labeling was L01, L02 etc for the trunks.

Hi Firebird Scrambler, thank you very much for the message and the Nortel Bible! Yes I would still be using the Marquis system today. So simple to use and robust, I looked for a replacement CCU for ages but could not find one anywhere. It still partially works and when I can afford it, I am going to get the ring tone on it properly recorded as an MP whatever so when I end up with a phone system that can use MP(*) files I can have the ring tone back again. This Vompact will have to do in the mean time. This must be a later type as the connector is mounted straight to the CCU. All wired up and working now apart from the re-program which I am going to do now. Many thanks again. Ben.
