I am experiencing sound problems.
I go to control panel - Sounds and Audio Devices--Volume tab and everthing is shaded out.
I have got errors 0x80004005 related to Direct Play Setup (Dpvsetup.exe).
I ran the "dxdiag" utility for DirectX testing and tested my sound and recieved the 0x8878000a error which stated that my test failed at step 3 and that another device was using the soundcard.
I recently installed a Belkin PCI 10/100MB Ethernet card for use with a new cable modem connection. The drivers for the soundcard are installed.
I am wondering if the installation of the Ethernet card has anything to do with my lost of sound. I have lost my sound.
My sound card is enabled and working properly according to the Device manager.

Does the sound work when you remove the NIC card? Do you also have on-board sound?

Check in Control Panel\ Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Audio tab, make sure the correct default device is set (your sound card) and not something like "modem playback" or similar.
Check that the "Use only default devices" check box is checked.

These problems with Sound nearly always seem related to drivers: removing, re-installing, or updating drivers is always a good thing to try.

I have not tried removing the NIC card yet that was going to be my next step. I just wanted to make sure that it would not prevent me from reestalishing my cable modem connection.

All of the boxes under sounds and devices are shadowed out not allowing me to access them.
