Okay, this is not the same issue as the following:
"Windows XP does not search all files to enhance the performance of searching and to avoid extraneous results. This behavior occurs whether or not you use the Indexing service when you search. Therefore, Windows XP has a known issue for not finding a number of File Types when you do a Search for Files "containing text" or using the "A word or phrase in the file" option."

There is a Quick Books file in the C:\Program Files\Quicken Folder of this computer I have. I can see it, I can open it.

But.... If I do a search for *.qbw, that file is not found. It finds some QBW files in other folders though!! I don't understand.

I have disabled the Search Assistant to get the Windows 2000 search LOOK, but I do that on all computers, so it has nothing to do with that. And I have the Indexing Service turned off, but I also do that on all PCs.

what are the attributes of the file in question (hidden, protected..)?

The file and the folder. Are you getting results from that folder or her childern?

Cheers,
Dian

Let me clarify one thing. When I do the search and select "Local Hard Drive C:" as the "Look In" setting, the search finds some QBW files but NOT the one that exists in C:\program files\quicken.

When I do the search and use "c:\program files" as the "Look In" setting, it finds my file right away.

So, apparently, it's not searching the whole C: drive even though I'm asking it to search the whole drive in the first instance.

Atributes of the QBW file that it is NOT finding are:
Read Only. I get that both by right clicking on the file and also from ATTRIB at the DOS prompt.

Are you selecting the More Advanced Options and checking the Search System Folders and Hidden Files and Folders Options?

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Wow - that's it. I just duplicated the behavior on my PC with and without checking the advanced options.

I guess I never considered the Program Files folder to be one of the folders excluded with a default search and/or it must mean that I never stored any data in the Program Files folder that I needed to search for.

Thanks.
