I have an XP Pro laptop that is part of a Small Workgroup. The Laptop has joined the workgroup and has been given a correct IP config from DHCP.

The Laptop can ping the File Server by IP Addy, but not by name (DNS Problem I know) but it has the same DNS Server as the other seven or so clients on the LAN.

When I do an IPCONFIG /ALL , The Node type is listed as unknown instead of broadcast.

I check the registry under HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/NETBT/Paramaeters/

The key for Dhcpnodetype is'nt there

I cannot map any drives on the Network, not browse shared drives/Servers from Run \\Servername\Sharename

Any ideas?

Thanks

An "Unknown" node type defaults to Broadcast. But you can force it. Open notepad, copy/paste the below, and save as node.reg :

****** start copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
"NodeType"=dword:00000001
"DhcpNodeType"=-

****** end copy/paste above this line.

Double-click to merge with your registry and reboot.

Thanks for that - I added it in but it doesnt seem to have solved my problem.

I can connect to the Internet through the LAN
I can ping by IP addy not name
When I try and map a drive by IP Addy, I get the following error when it asks for a username/password to authenticate, in the box where I enter my username, the Servername precedes this and even though the password is correct, it keeps coming back with it

e.g \\servername\username

When I try and map a drive by Servername, I get 'Network path \\Servername\sharename could not be found'

Any ideas?

Thanks

silly question, but have you hecked to see if the browser service has started ok?
and checked the event logs too?

Aftertaf

The Browser service is started and the only notable errors in the Event log are as follows:

Event ID 17
Time Provider NtpClient: An error has occured during DNS lookup of the manually configured peer 'time.windows,com, Ox1'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 15 minutes. The error was A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host (0x80072751)

Event ID 7000

The crd service failed to start due to the following error: The Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

. Make sure that you have taken the step to 'enable Netbios over TCP/IP'
. Make sure that the username and password are made a local username and password on the computer hosting the share you want to access.

I've done both of those and still no joy.

Should I reinstall TCP/IP??

Also, is it posssible the share server already has 10 connections?

I did a search for the Server by IP Address and could then browse the shares. I can now map any of the shares I want...very strange.

Thanks for all the help
