My company is currently using Metaframe XP and publishing Word XP and Excel XP. To minimize the number of concurrent users on each server, we wnat to log them off after a set period of time, but we also want to be able to save any documents they may have open before they are logged off. The Autosave feature in Word and Excel will only bring them back to those documents if the process is killed. Has anyone else tried this? If so, what would be the best way to go about it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JKarnes,

Not really going to answer your questions but would just advise against the can of worms you are about to open.

Have you considered....

1: How pi**ed people are going to get with this, in order for it to be practical I would suggest you would have to consider a fairly aggresive timelimit (IE an hour or 2) otherwise it simply wouldn't be worthwhile.

2: The fact that people will be potentially logged off whilst halfway through a document, and have to get it finished so simply immediately log back on again and continue, therefore making a farce of the whole idea.

3: People having a document saved because they have been idle only to find that changes they made are incorrect or unwanted only to have the document irrevocably overwritten.

I could go on... but these are serious enough to consider.

I can sympathise with idle timeouts, just be careful with what you wish for....
