In wordperfect I use a function keyboard/merge for legal document. I need to utilize this same function in Word XP. Can I use mail merge or is there something else? If so, does mail merge allow you to use a word document as a data file?

Yes. You can use another word document as the data source.

In word, go to tools -> mail merge, and if you follow all steps you should be able to figure out how to do it yourself.
