Word - Problem Aligning Linked Tables 2

I am linking tables from MS Excel into a Word Document. I do this, center the table on the document and save. When I reopen the document the tables are aligned left instead of centered like they were when I saved the document.

Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong or need to do differently? Thanks in advance.

Style: None that I know of.

When copy the Excel table, I paste link as HTML.

Sorry. I still don't what version you are using of Word.

I can not duplicate this in Word 2002. It remains centered when I reopen the document.

Select Format > Styles and Formatting. Probably some format it set and you need to change it.

I found formatting very confusing when I first started using Microsoft Word, having used a different word-processing system before that. Like many Microsoft ideas, it is quite clever but the software applies it without bothering to ask if you want to do things that way.

After playing around with this I discovered that if I center the linked table, save the word doc and re-open the word doc and say "yes" to the update links question when I open it, it changes the alignment of all the linked tables. If I say "no", it leaves the linked table centered.

I have played with the formatting, but it appears it all depends on the answer to the update links question.

Any ideas on how I might be able to update the links without having to re-center all my linked tables in my word doc?

Hmm, I encountered a similar issue on Word 2003. The scaling of the table changes when I update via Edit,Links update. not fully investigated but sounds like the same issue. Watching the thread with interest. (My goal is to understand how to most efficiently ensure that all the linked tables in a document are updated.)

Hi ProgEval,

Which paste link format are you using (eg Excel object, RTF, Bitmap, Picture)?

How are you centering the table?

Also, if you're pasting the link as RTF, are you trying to change the formatting of the individual cells? If so, that certainly won't stick.

Gavona: Using Edit|Links should only be used if you need to change the link path, and then only if the objects are at their default link size. Otherwise, as you've discovered, they'll re-size. This is by design. The quick way to refresh the links without having them change size is to press Ctrl-A then F9. As well as updating the links, this will update any other fields in the body of the document. If you need to change the link path for in-line objects and not have them resize, it's best done by pressing Alt-F9 to display the field codes, then using Find/Replace, or simple editing, to change the paths.

I am using paste link as HTML. I have tried centering various ways, selecting table and clicking the center button, right clicking on the table and centering in properties and through the editing styles and formatting. All have the same result.

Thanks Macropod, it is always good to know when things are by design and when they relate to ones own abilities/knowledge!

In fact I had suggested Ctrl-A, F9 to my colleague but that did not update - which is why we tried using the Edit,Links approach. I will have another go next time I get the chance and post back on a new thread if I cannot get it working.

Apologies to ProgEval for hijacking thread - I thought I had the same issue as you!

breaking my own rules...

once u link the table, and press alt/f9, u should see something like this -

{LINK Excel.Sheet.8.......}

change it to look like this
{LINK \* Mergeformat Excel.Sheet.8.......}

or u can put mergeformat at the end

also, i think u r centering the table using center justification on the toolbar and not using table properties.

btw, as far as i know the vers no u quoted above (5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600) is for WinXp, not for word

Hi ProgEval,

If you want the pasted object to stay put, put in in a text box or table cell positioned where you want the object to stay.
