Word/Excel creating TMP files, & can't reopen files!!!!

Office XP Standard, across a LAN, running @ 100/full.
When I open and save a word/excel file it doesn't remove the TMP file which it creates and therefore the file can't be re-opened.
user's have full permission's to delete.
