How do I set up columns to make a tri fold brochure

Use column breaks.

Assuming you want it in landscape:

1. Set PageSetup as Landscape.
2. Select the Column button on the Standard toolbar
3. Select it as three columns
4. Hit Enter a couple of times - this is just to show some room in each column.
5. Select Insert > Break > Column break. You are now in column 2.

Repeat 4 and 5. You now have three columns.
