Purchased new computer which came with WinXp Home installed on 40 gig HDD. Connected computer to insure all was operational. It was. Disconnected computer, removed 40gig HDD and replaced with 92gig HDD, partitioned and installed WinXp Pro. Everything seems to work fine but... Xp Pro apparently disabled several devices, one of which must control audio. Same external speakers and computer sounds worked fine while 40gig HDD was connected with WinXp Home software but not with Xp Pro. Anybody got a clue how to fix this/these? Help. Please!

The disabled devices are reported as: SM Bus Controller;Multimedia Audio Controller; and Video Controller. Tried reinstalling drivers for each. No go. Tried updating drivers. No go. Tried rollback of drivers. Nothing.

DMA reports Conflicts/Sharing as follows:
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller
IRQ 23 Intel (r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
IRQ 23 Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
IRQ 19 Intel(r)82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
IRQ 19 Lucent Win Modem

Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF VgaSave

The computer is a Compaq Presario; Intel Celeron 2.70ghz; 256 Ram;92gig Hitachi HDD; Sound (integrated audio onboard) running WinXp Pro.

Any idea why were the drivers not included on the WinXp Pro installation disk? Ever seen this problem before with WinXp Pro installation? Thanks.

You should see if you can download the sound drivers off compaq's site as alot of onboard sound drivers are not included on Windows XP cd ( your home version probably had it incorperated in it by compaq if it came with the system )
You also may need to set some of the IRQ,I/O manually in the system device manager ( not hard to do )

The XP Home installation was probably an OEM install from the Compaq factory with the drivers for the installed equipment included.

Your XP Pro (Retail or OEM???) would only have the usual selection of XP drivers installed with it and would not know what other drivers you may require for your particular setup.

What CD's were supplied with your original purchase? Some extra CD's may include the drivers you are looking for. Although I suspect being from Compaq this might not be the case (you might only have a Recovery CD or even only a Recovery Partition?). Have you explored what the Home CD contains (if you have one)? There may be folders on that which contain the drivers you are looking for.

Linney & Happydownloader:

I think the original HDD was "an OEM install from the Compaq factory with the drivers for the installed equipment included." Seemed reasonable to me, too, that Compaq would have those drivers on their website for download. Nope. Checked that. Also, no OS CDs were included with the original system purchase. (My Xp Pro was a retail purchase.)

System documentation says that there is a Recovery Partition on the original 40g HDD that I removed and did not do a system backup of the 40g HDD.

Question: If I reinstall the 40g and do a system backup of Xp Home, what are the caveats in using the Home backup to update the drivers for my Xp Pro installation on the 92g HDD?

Question: If necessary, how do I set/reset system device manager IRQ, I/O manually?

And... Plan Z:
The motherboard is a Micro-Star Gamila/Giovani/Neon series. Question: Is it likely that the MSI website has drivers for their onboard devices?

Thanks for your former/future help.
