We have ran into a strange problem. We have a workgroup that consists of 3Win Xp Pro machines and 1 win2000 pro machine. The windows 2000 acts as a file server that everyone shares data on. Everyone logs in without passwords

Recently one of the xp machines was prompted for a password to logon to the win 2000 Pro machine. The other 2 xp machines could logon without password just as they always had.
Under users, the box was not checked to require other users to connect to use a password. I checked this box then everyone had to use a password. I went back and unchecked it, but still everyone is required to use a password.

Does anyone know what gives?

TIA

How are the shares on the 2k machine set up/is the guest account on that machine enabled?

On the Win2k machine:
Start, Run, net user Guest/Active:yes

The net user command had no effect.

We have two folders that are shared. The xp machines used to be able to access the folders without a password. Then, for some reason, one of the xp machines was required to use a password. Now all the machines require a password.

My first though would be to follow faq608-4650

But to clarify matters:

Win2k has full username and passwords entered as local usernames and passwords.

WinXP workstation #` (for example) has a user that makes a logon with identical credentials as entered into the Win2k "server", including no blank or empty passwords.

And an access denied error is thrown to the share?
