Hi,

Someone can help me?
I can't understand a simple question on w2k. I have only one server (on Lab), and, only one client. Both with w2k (Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows 2000 professional).
The hardware are diferente, but, the most significant thing are, both are connect by network cards at 100 Mb full duplex, by cross cable, both are in the same workgroup (LAB51).
When I start a simple copy fron server to workstation or vice-versa, the copy of 10 files of 40MB take more than 10 minutes!
Whel, I can't understand where is the problem!
100 Mb/s = 12.5 MB/s
10 files * 40 MB = 400 MB
400 MB / 12.5 MB/s = 32 seconds!!
It's simple! Ok, I don't leave in count the time of processing of operational system, disk latency, and other delays.
I fill something is not right!
How can I improve the network performance?
How can I improve the Windows 2000 performance?

Thanks in advance

Douglas

Virus scanning?

Are the NICs actually connecting at 100Mb?

File fragmentation of the source files?

NTFS security privileges on the source files?

By the order:

NO

Both on 100 Mb / full duplex

No

NO

thanks by your interest

Are you getting much latency when you use ping (bad cabling or hardware)?
Is there an internet connection to either of these machines (possibly poor routing)?
Are you running TCP/IP?
Are you copying files using Windows Explorer?
Try setting your NIC cards to 10base T and see what your delay is.
Do you see collisions on the hub?
Is it possible a program in the background is interfering with memory or hard drive access (on either machine)?
Lastly, which NIC cards do you have, and what kind of hub?

Douglas,

Enable the network monitoring on server and look for packet loss, missing ACK bits or other troubles. Or set up a hub between the machines and attach third computer with LAN scanner active. Something isn't working as it should, I can move 650MB (a CD) from my server (all SCSI) to a Win2K client (also all SCSI) in under 4 minutes.

Check your hosts and lmhost file and make sure they are correct. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
