I have networked two machines via a linkysys cable/dsl router. One machine has win98 and the other win2K. I have had a few problems with the network.

1. I used the following network profile: client for microsoft networks,TCP/IP and file and printer sharing on both machines. this didn't work, I couldn't see either machine on the network. However I could use the internet on my win98 machine

2. I added NetBeui to the above profile to both computers and enabled LMHOSTs lookup on the win2k machine. Now I can see the win98 machine (shared folders etc) on my win2k machine and I can see the win2K computer name under the win98 network neighbourhood but I can't see the folders shared on the win2k machine. Now I can't use the internet on my win98 machine.

My current network profile on the win98 machine is client for microsoft networks, TCP/IP, NetBeui (set as default protocol) and file and print sharing (both options enabled). The same profile exists on the win2k machine.

I am desperate for any help you could provide. Thankyou.

Suggest you use the Keyword Search (at the top of the page) and look for ICS (internet connection sharing).

Here are a few threads I found that may be able to get you started:

As for the File/Printer sharing, I do recall someone had mentioned that the DNS has to be the same on both machines (I'm certain in one of those ICS results you'll get; someone had mentioned it.)

Excuse this question if it seems dum as I have just started to learn all this.

Can ICS be setup when there is a router in the network. My current setup is cable modem connected to the WAN port of the router and my two machines connected to ports 1 and 2. So the internet connection to both computers should be directly through the rounter, is this right?

I have the same config at home, 'cept with a D-Link router. My Win98 box was blind on the local network until I disabled the master browser on the box, then it worked fine.

By default, the Win2k box should be the master browser in this configuration, but for some reason it caused a conflict.

Working fine now, have 2 shares and two shared printers on the Win2k box that are fully accessible.

Thankyou all for your help. I fixed all the problems except for one: My windows98 can't see the shared folders on my win2k machine.

I have setup the win98 machine as a user on win2k. the folders are shared on both machines. The logon is setup. The workgroup is setup properly. I disable the master browser option under win98.

I have Norton Internet Security/firewall 2003 on the win2k machine. I disabled it to see if that solved the problem but it didn't.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Try enabling the guest access and re-set the password of guest to "blank". This is what I have to do to get my win98 terminals seeing the windows 2000 computer.

Oops!..I should have said: Try enabling the guest access on the Windows 2000 machine and re-set the password of guest to "blank". This is what I have to do to get my win98 terminals seeing the windows 2000 computer.

No, I did not have to add the user of guest to the Win98 machine. Just enable the guest account on the win2000 box, reset the password to a blank password and don't forget to share the folder or drive on the win2000 machine.

Actually I was directing that to Techy. I disable the guest on every machine I touch. With the above scenario, anyone could log into your machine, I'm not willing to take that chance. Adding a local user account to both machines with the same password will work, as long as they are in the same workgroup, as I have done this for clients in the past that had mixed 2000 and downlevel boxes...
