I have a client that wants voicemail to email. In my office, on our IP500 I have the outgoing smtp server set to just mail.optonline.net:25 (our ISP). On our client's VM computer, I have tried about 100 different SMTP settings that have all checked out, but it just never sends an email. They have Verizon FIOS, which I tried outgoing.verizon.net:587, this doesn't work. I am at a loss.

Are there any log files i can check to see exactly what is happening when the system is trying to send an email? Or does anyone have any suggestions?

download debug view from the tools section in
for vm pro you must set the mail server in the client tool to smtp, then in the configuration screen put a email addres in the profile section and then the smtp details in the smtp section.
when running debugview set all applications to logging level 1 and vm pro to logging level 9 and deselect the things you don't need to see.

You will have trouble with Verizon FIOS when attempting to use an offsite mail server. You will need to set up an internal SMTP server to relay messages from your voice mail server.

on the debug view it shows:

"error 7 sending email to "

then the email address

You can run regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avaya\Media Services\Directories\

Set:
SMTPLogging = 1

Then find your logpath here:
LoggingDir = path

Make a test call. You will see it send in debug view..you have installed it..right?

Change into the log path and open up the smtp log. It will look something like this if successful. Something else if not:

changed the settings to the client's internal mail server and now i get "error 8" instead

finally got it working...i used the ip address of the smtp server and it now works...but one more issue...

if i use an email address as the voicemail email, it works fine, but if i use a cell phone, to send an sms, it does not work

I assume Tom you have not discovered the secret method of activating the IP Offices hidden GSM gateway unit and SMS functionality.....if you don't know how I aint telling :) (Flash hook 15 times while shouting "Activate" into the handset)

thebopps, seriously though, how were you setting this up exactly?

thebopps, every cell phone should have an sms address as well.

IE <yourcellnumber>@vtext.com for Verizon.

We need something like the debug for tracing embedded VM, is there anything like that around?

I wanted to find out all the SMTP traffic between it and the mail server. All the tools I have used so far (Wireshark etc) crash all the time or they don't understand SMTP.

Monitor will trace embedded events if required, not sure about the SMTP with that though :)

>(Wireshark etc) crash all the time

Hmm wireshark is usually pretty stable - I don't think I've ever had a problem with it. Are you rolling you logs over?

However there is a fix in the latest release...

EVM->email doesn't work. Issue caused by reception of multiline response to ELHO command.

Which vaguely looks similar.

Take Care

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.
