I am running windowsXP Home edition and am having problems installing my scanner, had it running fine on my last computer which had WindowsXP pro on it and I got this new unit. when I try to instal I get box popping up " 16 bit windows subsystem" " C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications."

any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you........John

Thank you bcastner the Autoexec.nt was missing, put it back in windows system32 and am back up and running.......John

Now it remains to resolve why this file is disappearing so often for so many. I do not recall the thread in which linney and I traded links and a discussion of this; but:

. some suggestions are that it is a consequence of Service Pack 2;

. others view that as nonsense, it is a likely malware issue.

I happen to think at the moment with the group who votes malware.

Please be sure to do a malware scan after you sort the scanner issue. faq608-4650

Best wishes,
Bill Castner
