Vista Business install hangs 1

In attempting to upgrade to Vista Business from XP home, the installation hangs right after I enter the product code and hit enter. It also hangs if I manually select the version of Vista I have.
The Task Manager goes to 100% CPU usage and the hard drive light weakly flashes intermittantly but after more than 2 hours of this, nothing more happens. I can Alt Tab to XP but the installation just stops.
According to the compatability program, I have no hardware issues as I am running a Pentium 4 2.4 gHz Intel CPU, 1 GB of RAM, NVidia GeForce FX 5500 on an Intel D865PERL Mother board.
I disable my AVG antivirus as well as kill all the processes in Task Manager for the antivirus. I kill Zone Alarm as well and Spyware Guard and Windows Defender so I don't think any of these are the problem though who knows?
I have tried to use the VCdControlTool app as the copy I have is from a 10 license DVD and I was allowed to make a copy as there is only the one install DVD and I needed the back up. Trying to install from either the DVD or the image file brings up the same results.
Any help y'all could give would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any Bios Scanning enabled? Is there any Bios update available? Have you tried setting any Bios to the Safe Defaults setting? Have you tried unplugging any unnecessary hardware, especially USB things?

Perhaps you should uninstall ZoneAlarm (disabling is not sufficient to prevent any settings applying) and use MsConfig to disable the rest of your security programs.

This link will allow you to see and check the Upgrade requirements. How much free hard drive space do you have?

Linney,

Thanks for the reply.
In answer to your questions, as far as I know, I don't have any bios scanning running. I can check on the Intel site for a bios upgrade but I have upgraded it once already though admitedly, that was awhile back.
I am not overclocking and as far as I know, all my bios settings are "safe". The Mobo pretty much set itself up when I installed it and I haven't changed any settings recently at all.

The only outside peripherals that are plugged in are my 2 USB printers and a USB trackball but I will try disconnecting those and see what happens. (I have a PS2 mouse for backup).

I have 23GB of free space on the C: drive.

I'll also uninstall Zone Alarm as well and give it another go.

Troubleshoot Windows installation problems

Make sure you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed before you upgrade a computer running Windows XP to Windows Vista.

If you want to install Windows Vista as an upgrade, update the drivers for the hard disk controller to the latest drivers. To determine whether you have the most up-to-date drivers for the hard disk controller, contact the manufacturer of your computer hardware. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your computer, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Run the Chkdsk.exe utility to check for disk problems.

You cannot select or format a hard disk partition when you try to install Windows Vista

I disabled just about everything except the main hard drive and the CD/DVD drives and it worked!! Vista is now installed and almost everything is working as it did before.
The only hitch is that I can't get any audio in for recording purposes. The line in function says it is unavailable and I supposedly have the most up to date drivers for my sound card which uses the C-media CMI8738/C3DX driver family. I can play audio just fine, I just can't get it to register on the record portion of the mixer. None of the record source buttons will activate. This is true for audio playing from the CD/DVD drives as well which should register as they are internal input.

That and how do I get rid of the annoying warning popups every time I want to view system settings, install something, or uninstall something?

Thanks for the help.

If it is a driver compatibility problem then that is something to be discussed with the manufacturer. You do have slightly different Audio controls in Vista compared with XP. To make sure things are set up correctly, right-click on the Volume Icon in the Notification Area and select Recording Devices. This will bring up a Property page where you can again right-click and see if things are Enabled or you can configure devices.

As to UAC that is part and parcel of Vista considered to be a security improvement. It can be disabled but you must understand the consequences.

Is disabling Vista's User Account Control wise?
