Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated so first off thank you in advance to taking the time to read this. I have been tasked with upgrading a customer from basic to essential and I have a couple of questions. Current system is Basic V9 and have acquired V9 essential license. I have many years experience with Nortel\Cisco, etc... and once attended Avaya boot camp and was certified about 4 years ago but many things have changed since then... One of which is basic edition, when I attended boot camp basic edition didn't exist.

1) Will the config remain in tact after the upgrade or will I need to reconfigure the entire system? My vendor is telling me it needs to be reconfigured all over but I found some Avaya documentation disputing that however that documentation was specific to R8. ??

2) Any recommendations as far as contingency plan if all goes to hell?

3) What is the proper procedure to perform this upgrade? Start from scratch? Use the upgrade option from the advanced menu?

Any other information to lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Joe

1 No, you have to reprogram the system
2 get ill and let a collegue do the job.... just follow rule 1
3 yes, start from scratch:
Switch to IP Office mode, default to factory settings, reset the security settings, add licenses and program it all as needed.

Indeed, to elaborate on point 3, no you don't use the upgrade option, in the same File > Advanced menu is the "Change mode" option...use that, the password is "password" by default :)

That's what I was afraid of..... By reset to factory settings I'm assuming you mean hold down the reset button on the rear? or use the erase config option under advanced? And just so I'm clear, once I change to IP office mode and reset to factory settings, add license, etc... if I have the config already built in offline mode I would be able to then just push the new config correct?

As far as a backout plan, my thought was to copy the SD card to my laptop before I do anything so if all went to crap I would be able to put it back to its original state by copying the data back to the card and recreating it. (using Recreate IP Office SD Card option under advanced mode)

Thanks again to both of you guys for the reply, it is greatly appreciated.

I think I'm feeling a little feverish.... ;-)

Just changing mode will default it for you, yes you can pre build and then fire the config in. You can copy the entire contents of the card to a folder and if goes wrong re-format then just copy it back, refit it and reboot...job done :)

You sir, are the man! Thank you again for taking the time make my day easier! If you're ever in the south I owe you a beer. I'm looking forward to getting back in the Avaya world and getting my cert back and it appears I have landed in a good area here.

The File | Advanced | Switch to Standard Mode command in Manager provides an option to try and preserve the existing configuration.

DON'T - as the folks above have stated its best to start from scratch.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

If it's basic the config should be a snap to reproduce in Essential. Very little you can do with Basic.

Yea pretty much everything except the delayed AA... :) That was simple in basic but not so much in Essential.. Not a big deal but it does require a few more steps since you can't just fallback to AA from the ICR... If anyone has had to do this you know what I'm referring to. It's been a few years since I've configured one but not a lot has changed within essential and that's what I'm more familiar with so once I get it upgraded I'll be happy.

step 0.

Don't install Muppet mode in the first place :) always go for essential edition (the clue is right there in the name!)

it just is not worth the grief from the customers because it can do virtually nothing & then you have to retrain them all over again when they upgrade.

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

Couldn't agree more IPGuru, as far as I'm concerned muppet mode doesn't exist...

One other question, should I isntall the license when I build the new config offline or leave it out and install after I fire in the new config?

Cool, that's how I have it but wanted to verify, thank you!

You can even build the config with the licence in and save it as config.cfg, then stick in on the SD card in the primary folder, re fit the card and reboot, it will boot in the correct mode with the new config you created and you're ready to rumble :)

ah, that make sense. Would I need to format the card first or do anything to it or just copy and refit as stated above?

It won't hurt to format and recreate put it that way, then fire the cfg in....sorted guvner :)

Just wanted to follow up and say thank you! Upgrade went very smooth and had them back up and running in about 20 minutes.
