If I upgrade from v6.0 to v9.0 on a IPO500 do I just need the upgrade license Its already got Preferred but not Essential. If I went to 9.1 I think I'd need a Essential as well. Hope someone can put me right.

If your chassis is a IP500v1 (the one with the "credit card" in the back), R9.0 is the highest you can go.

If you do the upgrade process as described in the docs, you will get a virtual Essential license for free on your way up to R9.0.
So, you need only the Upgrade license (buy the R9.1 right away, it works for all previous releases as well)

That said, if your chassis breaks, you can't transfer the virtual Essential to the replacement.
It will be safer to buy an real Essential license, then the swap can be done in minutes, not days/weeks

Kind regards

Gunnar

When upgrading to Release 8 from a previous major release an upgrade licence is
required. It is recommended that the IP Office Release 8 Software Upgrade license is
installed before upgrading the system. Although the license key may not be recognized
immediately by the system running an earlier major release of software, it will be
recognized when the system is upgraded to Release 8.

The table below shows the necessary steps that must be taken to upgrade the IP Office
system to Release 8.0:
Platform CurrentRelease Upgrade Step
IP500 4.x /5.0/6.x/7.0 Load 8.0
IP500v2 6.x/7.0 Load 8.0
All modules 4.x/5.0/6.x/7.0 Load 8.0

Upgrades from Release 8.0 and 8.1 to 9.0 are supported. A system running a release
earlier than Release 8.0 must upgrade to Release 8.0 before upgrading to Release
9.0. To upgrade a system running a Release earlier than 8.0 can upgrade to Release
8.0 using the details in the IP Office Technical Bulletin 140. Note: No interim licenses
are required for the upgrade other than Release 9.0 upgrade license. The following
sections refer to the components relevant installation, migration, upgrade and
configuration documents that contain detailed upgrade steps.
