My new system at work runs Windows XP Pro SP1. On my old system (Win2K) I could go to the command prompt and run ftp manually - something I do quite often to check out sites, etc. before scripting the connections. However, on this new box, any attempt to run ftp from the command prompt results in an error message "ftp is not a recognized command ... ". Note that WS_FTP Pro works just fine on this same machine.

I've checked 'Internet Options/Advanced' and played with the passive ftp checkbox - doesn't seem to make any difference.

If it was just that I wasn't able to ftp through our multilayered security/firewall I'd understand - but I can't ftp to servers within the firewall either unless I use WS_FTP Pro.

Thoughts/comments appreciated - my desktop support folks are as puzzled as I am.

Tnx.

Tom

sounds like a PATH environment variable problem. make sure c:\windows\system32 is part of the path. either that, or the "ftp.exe" program was removed, renamed, or is corrupted. it is a standard part of windows xp.

If the server(s) are within your network then you should be able to add a Network Place (via My Network Places) to the FTP location and use that to connect rather than the DOS FTP command and a 3rd Party Utility.

It's apparently a path issue - the program is there and my network gurus tell me that there is absolutely nothing in the image they used for my new machine that would prevent this. Also, when I go to c:\windows\system32 and run ftp.exe it launches just fine. Since the path shows that directory, the desktop/network folks are 'investigating'.

Appreciate the assist - thanks!
