subst drive gets deleted at boot

I use subst to create a drive in place of a long pathname on dr c:. I notice that upon reboot this drive I created disappears and I have to recreate it. Is there a way to make it permanent wrt reboot? If there is, what cmd will later remove the drive if the issue arises.?

subst unfortunately is not persistent, so all substituted paths are lost when you reboot.

You can however create a batch file to run the subst command, and have it execute at Startup so it creates the drive every time the machine is started.

If you ever need to remove a drive you can use the subst command again with the /d switch.

Use:
subst /?
at the command prompt for subst usages.

I took the link but I don't understand the concepts and advantages/purposes of junctions and links. Any links that explain it in more simple terms? Also - can these be set up at the cmd level or are these must the junction or link be created with a vb function?

Just store the batch file in your Windows startup folder and it will run every time you log on.

Do you mean C:\Documents and Settings\Ray\Start Menu?

The easiest way is to use the start Up folder in the Start Menu to get he Batch file to run.

C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

Just save your batch file to that location, and it will automatically make it run every time Windows starts.

Put the batch file in that folder, or use the "All Users" user folder if you want to make it run for every user that logs into the machine, instead of a specific one.
