Hi,

I have an ATX computer with a Gigabyte GA6BX7+ motherboard. Everything was working fine until a few months ago. Since then when ever I shutdown my computer I get orange vertical lines on the monitor instead of it switching off. I have tried different Video Card, Monitor, and PCI Slot all off which show the same effect. It is almost like something isn?t getting the signal to switch off.

Also, we have had hot weather which cased my computer to switch it self off for no reason which I have put down to overheating as this didn?t happen if I removed the side panel. Now that it has cooled down my computer has stop switching it self off but starts to beep at me after it has been on a while. I have been through the BIOS and can?t find anything which causes an alarm to sound. The beeps even happen whilst the computer is booting if I restart it.

Any ideas?

It sounds like the Motherboard is a bit dodgy X-) . Switching off? I know a lot of MoBo's have sensors that shut the computer off if the CPU fan stops working, but I'm not sure if it's a fault causing the shut down rather than a safety measure. The beeps, if they're happening for no apparent reason then that's another clue the MoBo's faulty. Try checking the temps after it's been on for 10 mins or so and make sure it's not too hot :~/ ,above about 50C CPU temp or 35C System temp.

I've had a few probs with my computer running too hot because of this baking hot weather B-) over here in England. I don't think it's heat related (although it's worth checking) but it sounds as if the motherboard isn't working as it should.

If it was me, then I'd change the MoBo if possible (and if it's still under warranty) but I'm sure there's some good advice to come below!

Good Luck! |-0

Hey, xscape, we're in for some more of that weather yet! (keeps the foot & mouth at bay I suppose...) :->
Those vertical lines... they appear AFTER the comp. has shut down? If so can only be a monitor issue but doesn't sound too serious. As for the bleeps, sounds like the BIOS warning of overheating. The shutdown sort of confirms this. It is possible that the heatsink is not in good contact with the metal pad on the chip. This is sometimes caused by sloppy or uninformed assembly. If you're comfortable with it, remove the heatsink and apply a very thin, even smear of heatsink compound to the chip and re-assemble. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments so far.

xscape, your right the shutting off isn't a safety measure as it shuts off before hitting the set temperature. After installing a second case fan it has stopped switching off. The beeps I am getting aren't in any kind of pattern. Also to back the theory of the motherboard dying, these beeps sometimes sound after 20 mins other times the don't sound at all.

hotfusion, I am not convinced that it is a monitor problem. Since they started, I have replaced my monitor with a new one (the old one did die on me). I have changed video cards and the motherboard, but still they appear *Sigh*

Many thanks for you help

Hi all.

Many Thanks for your answers.

Good news, I have found out and fixed the problem. The beeping was caused by the power supply. After changing it, it is now working and no unwanted beeps heard.

As for the orange lines when shutting down, that was.. OK, I still don’t know what that was, but after a format and install of Windows, the problem seems to have disappeared. :-V

Many Thanks
Mark
