I have an oldish Dell Dimension 8400 that is giving me the above error. It is running XP Pro.

I have attempted to get into the Dell recovery program via Ctrl-f11 but this does not work, giving me a keyboard error.

I have attempted to get into the windows recovery console, but it does not recognise the hard drive. I'm guessing that the hard drive (a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160Gb SATA) is not a standard one and therefore not recognised.

I've looked at but as I can't get into the machine at all, I can't turn Dr Watson on.

Safe mode doesn't work, nor does any of the other options (safe mode with prompt etc.)

Where to go from here?

Yes well that Microsoft article is the most relevant one there is on the web, as far as my search got. The easiest way to fix this is to run system restore from a bootable winxp cd. Check this link out:

Also, did you try to use last known good configuration in the boot screen?

Freestone, many thanks for your link, that was exactly what was needed. Had a little bit of trouble getting a floppy A drive, disk and configuring (found an old machine tucked away in a corner that had one), and it's all working OK now.

Many thanks again.

I'm glad you got it fixed and thanks for reporting back your success.
