StarTalk C - Message Fades Out

I have a customer with a StarTalk C on a MICS with R1/T1. When listening to their messages, sound fades in & out. Replaying usually works OK - message can be heard in full. Happens on different ext's & mboxes.
Thanks for any ideas as to what is causing problem!

check the voice ports on both system and voice mail

Are they trying to listen using speakerphone? muting the mike helps there.
