I just put a group of 9620 and 9650 phones on line on a new install. Customer is commenting on the sound of the dial tone. It works fine, but there is kind of a heartbeat to it where like every one second it wavers a little. He is asking me why and how to make it sound more even. Frankly they may all do it, I have never had anyone call me on it before. Is this network? Or just the way it is. Again, all if fine.

By default IP phones run the lowest codec, make sure they are running G711 :)

Not something i would call normal , jitter possibly can you plug a hub into the lan port before the connection to the customers network then plug a phone into the hub and see what you get , then you know if it is the kit or the network?

No hubs, just managed poe switch and vlan. R 8.0.18 or whatever the current is. It's barely noticible, but just not smooth. There's like a little timed pulse to the tone. I will check those items suggested and get back to you.

Experienced the same on analog POTS lines with several customers. Call setup and overall white noise unacceptable on analog trunks utilizing both combo cards and external trunk module. Sites were Stand Alone managed layer 2 switches with mixture of IP Phones. Tier III had us run captures with LAN Shark. Apparently fix is coming in maintenance release 8.x later this month.

codec is not g711

if the codec is g729 the dial tone sounds wabbly and ugly as hell but as soon as you are on a call it sounds decent (except if you have music in the background)
