When I download pictures from my camera - Canon A70 (best 3MP camera on the marked) - recently I have been having the problem that some of the files are getting set as "private". This makes it so that my wife complains that ... "Honey, some of the photos we took are missing ...". This is getting rather anoying. More details below.

I am rinning XP Home and am using NTFS. "Shared Documents" (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents) on the PC is setup as a share and has Security set for Everyone-Foll Control. Everything under "Shared Documents" inherits the parent permissions. Under "Shared Documents" I have a folder "Shared Pictures" where I download photos from the camer. The download always creates folder(s) based on the shooting date. Most of the files properly inherit the permissions but usually a few of the files end up with my the permissions set for my logon and "SYSTEM" set for full control and no other permissions. Any ideas why???

Note: Another wierd item in case it is related. Sometimes I have noted that if I rename a file (using F2), its name does not show as changed until I refresh the folder.

Thanks,
Mark

These are guesses only:

1. In Explorer, highlight the Top Picture folder, right-click, Customize this folder, and make certain it is set to a folder type of 'Pictures' or Photo Album. Check to apply to all subfolders.

2. If you are not using the XP Camera wizard to download the pictures, it is possible the service Log On setting is incorrect for this program. Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, find the service entry for your program, and change the Log On setting to the local system account instead of Administrator.

Regarding bcastner's guesses:
1) "Shared Pictures" is one of the special folders so the folder type feature is not available but it does appear to be Photo/Picture type since the Filmstrip view is available.

2) I am using the the app that came with the camera (Canon ZoomBrowser). It autoloads when the camera is detected (USB). Since you mentioned it I looked and found something interesting. For some reason it appears that the there are multiple copies of ZoomBrowser running. Every time I plug in (detect) the camera I get another copy but when I exit the app, the previous ones aren't disappearing. They are all running under my account (which is an Admin type account). This caused me to check to see if there is a newer verison - which there was. It did not fix the problem that the app is not terminating properly (multiple versions running) but maybe it will fix the access problem. I tried it once and all the pictures were visible from both accounts but since the problem was intermittent I'll have to give it some times to see if the problem is resolved

Just my luck - may have resolved the issue but discovered a new issue in the process. [dazed]

The new driver did not solve the problem

I believe this is "normal" NTFS behavior.

As far as the file system is concerned you are copying a set of files. In a copy operation any existing NTFS attributes are stripped, and the file or folder inherits the effective permissions of the new setting.

In your case it is clear that it is inheriting only the permissions of the CREATOR/OWNER.

I believe the issue has to do with the advanced permissions set at the top level Folder "Shared Documents"

Enter the Security tab for this Folder.
Click Advanced.
Add
Find Now
Advanced
Highlight Authenticated Users
OK
OK
Select in the 'Apply onto' box "all Folders and subfolders and files"
Check Full Permissions
Check the little box at the bottom to apply to this container and its objects only
Apply your settings.
