Hi

I'm having a problem and am not sure if it's an smtp problem, a DNS problem or a Notes/Domino configuration problem.

I work in a small office [30 users] and our network is a subnet off the largest tenant in the building - they run the router, internet access etc. Their domain name is Nche.edu

Our subnet is [A.B.143.*] and our domain name is aacn.nche.edu
We have 1 Notes 4.6 server running on NT 4.0 Sp6
server name: aacn.nche.edu/nche
domain name: nche.edu

this server has been up & running for almost 4 years now.

We have now purchased a domain name Nursingcolleges.org and need to use this on another subnet [A.B.142.*] in the building. The network administrator at Nche.edu said he'd make the necessary DNS entries for nursingcolleges.org.

Both [A.B.143.*] and [A.B.142.*] use the same switch to connect to the buildings fiber-optic backbone.

I'm having problems with Nursingcolleges.org
There is 1 Domino R5.0.6a server running on W2K Sp2
machine name: Nurse2
server name: nursingcolleges.org/nurse2
Fully qualified Internet host name: nursingcolleges.org/nurse2

I'm able to:
send e-mail from AACN to Nursingcolleges
send e-mail from Nursingcolleges to AACN
send e-mail from my personal e-mail accounts at ATT & Netscape to Nursingcolleges

I am NOT able to send e-mail from Nursingcolleges to anyone outside of the buildings network [i.e. to ATT or Netscape etc]. The logs tell me that SMTP returned a permanent error [see error logs below]

One other thing, when I receive e-mail at AACN from Nursingcolleges.org the 'From' field shows the sender as '"Tony_Dempsey/Nurse2%org/nurse2%org/nurse2" and not tony dempsey@nursingcolleges.org

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
Is it something to do with the server name, Internet host name or R5 configuration?
Is there a problem on the DNS servers of nche.edu
Is there a problem with the SMTP configuration?

any help is greatly appreciated
Tony Dempsey

You actually have two problems and I don't know of a work around for the second. I based on what you recieved for a message header, I can assume you are still using a notes 4.5 or 4.6 client.

Your outgoing mail problem lies in the smtp configuration documents. You will have 4 for each server. Take a look at your smtp foreign domain and global domain documetns, your smtp connection documents and the smtp agent on the server documents on the aacn server. You should be able to use the same formats on the nursing colleges server just changing the ip and name.

If those are all set correctly, then your outgoing problem is the same as your incoming mail problem. It is a philosphy design change in Notes between 4.x and 5. In 4.x the parsing of the smtp commands were handled by the agent on the server. In R5, the server pushes the information down to the client to let it parse and save processing power for real tasks. That's why I assume you are still using a 4.6 client on your new 5.0 server.
