SMTP Header shows LAN IP

I have a client with an exchange server setup in one of the local offices. Corp has deamed that the IPs to be used on the lan will be W.X.Y.Z . however these IPs are public IPs in use. I cant change this so please dont sugest that.
The headers of mail from this server are showing ip address W.X.Y.Z because this is the only IP known by Exchange or windows. The lan is behind a cisco router doing NAT on port 25 for inbound mail so everything worked fine until today. IP address W.X.Y.Z has been added to the DNSBLs (its a dial up number account in brazil).
What I need is a way for exchange to use the public IP assigned by the local ISP for smtp transactions, but I cant set it as the primary IP on the system or put this server live to the net as it is the only server for the office and has confidential info on it.
Im sure its just hidden somewhere, but there has to be a "use _._._._ IP for smtp" somewhere in exchange right?

Thanks for the advice...

I know of no "spoof with this IP address" option in Exchange. I doubt it would exist considering the ethical implications of such a feature. If such a setting did exist, it would most likely be in the IIS metabase, not Exchange per se.

Hmmm. Think of this alternate scenario, and maybe the ethical conflict will seem a little clearer.

I've been using my older brother's driver's license because I don't have a driver's license. Now my brother has a warrant out for his arrest. I still want to use his driver's license. How can I alter it so that I won't get arrested during a routine traffic stop?

I totally agree and appreciate the implications of what your saying... what I was half hopping for is if I set a second IP to the NIc as being the Assigned true public IP, if I could tell exchange to use it. I know windows would have to know about the ip and not just tell exchange to masquared as ip A.B.C.D even though its primary is W.X.Y.Z .
The problem is I need to cut through red tape to get the HQ guys to agree with me on the LAN ip changes and in the mean time mail is going to get spam bounced.
Maybe i'll just have to dangle the "your multi-million dollar quote wont make it to the recipient if we dont fix the IPs NOW!" carrot.
Thanks for the reality check.

If it can be fixed...
I can break it!

You could write an SMTP transport event sink to rewrite the headers on outgoing messages. You could also use a color copier to print up a few extra notes when you find yourself short two days before payday. I wouldn't recommend either one.

Lets face it. Instead of purchasing and registering a block of IP addresses, or using one of the ranges available for private networks, your company is "borrowing" the IP range from some ISP in Brazil. It'll never get better, it can only get worse and more expensive to fix as time goes on. The only real solution is the one you rejected out of hand in your first post.
