I have just installed a 2003 Server AD Domain with 4 XP clients (All standard Dell Kit). I have setup DNS on the server using the Manage My Server Wizard. DHCP addresses are given out by my ADSL router. I have set the DNS address to that of the server on each client in the TCP/IP properties as logons were taking several minutes however this problem has now been resolved by adding the DNS info to the clients.

When accessing any shared network directories on the server the browsing of directory tree is extremely slow and when you do open say an MS Word document it takes 10+ seconds to save when it is only say 20k in size.

There are a couple of 2000 Pro clients on the network with all operate at normal speed therefore the problem seems to be specific to XP clients.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Norton AV Corporate v7.6 has a real time file protection issue with XP.

If you are not running Norton, please disregard :)

I did have Inoculate 6 installed but took this off after reading that this could cause network speed issues due to an issue with 2003 server.

1. The AV issue happens because some AV programs update alternate data steams as they scan. This causes Windows to send an SMB CHANGE_NOTIFY to the client.

2. Look at the folder options on the client. You may be generating thumbnails each time you access a folder. If so, turn it off.

1. The virus software has been completely removed from both clients and server and the problem remains.

2. Thumbnails are not being generated. As I mentioned, file saving takes an extremely long time (sometimes up to 2 mins for a 1 Mb file) hence ruling out the thumbnail generation theory.

Thanks,

Barry

there's another post that may help you out...

thread931-742774 run norton corporate on 3 different 2003 DC's without any problems at all btw.

Please stop posting info relating to AV software. I have removed it all. I am interested in a fix to network file access speed as described. When this is resolved I can then look at a suitable AV solution.

The fix was (although I don't know why) was to take DHCP off the router and put it on 2003 server.

Thanks,

Barry
