I have a system that I recently upgraded from '98 to XP and everything runs great except for one problem. When I first went to shut down I got the old "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message. I then enabled APM in the power options and now when I try to shutdown it restarts instead - the only way to shutdown is to hold in the power button or unplug the pc.

I tried updating the bios to version 6VTA2707 - the newest I could find, but it did no good. I've seen this happen alot with old chaintech and some old HP boards - is there a work around for it? I've tried every combination of settings in the bios I can think of but nothing helps.

Thanx in advance.

Thanks for the help ski, unfortunately nothing at that link was of any use. I tried everything they suggested to no avail. Does anybody have any other ideas?

Try this:

Go to Start/Run, type regedit, click OK, click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of PowerDownAfterShutdown to 1.

If the value isn't present, add it by creating the string value PowerDownAfterShutdown and setting the value to 1.

Did you actually upgrade 98 to XP, or do a clean install of XP? If the former, you may find backing up and clean installing XP solves this (and other potential problems which may arise from an upgrade).

Of course, if you have many apps installed (possibly without original install files), you may not want to do this!

Hey guys thanks for the reply.

I actually tried upgrading first and I then isntalled another hard drive and did a clean install of XP but I get the same problem.

I haven't tried the reg hack thou, I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Windows XP restarts unexpectedly or restarts when you shut down the computer

How To View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Do any error entries appear in the System Log with a timestamp around the time of a shutdown?

I had an instance recently of a system that exhibited the same symptoms and it turned out to be the cradle used to synchronize a PDA with the system. Once the cradle was detached from the system, the shutdown problem disappeared.
