hi
maybe someone can clue me in on a couple of windows performance settings....
i looked at a buddy's computer today and in his config folder in msconfig he had some entries,they were
devise=c:\essolo.sys
shell=c:\command.com /p /e: 2048
shell=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
dos:high,auto,umb
fileshigh=40
all of these had boxes with checks in them
he was running 98se it's a compac computer.he has 96meg of ram,and at boot-up he has 59% resources free..with the resources that low his computer was very responsive..Are these setting responsible for it's performance?
i don't have these setting in mine..

sorry forgot to say
THANKS

This is extra stuff carried forward from something else. Like maybe a DOS install first and SE installed without getting the autoexec.bat and config.sys out of the way.
They are not responsible for his faster machine.
I would suspect that the ess entry is for a sound card and everything else is parallelling what SE would load natively. Not hurting anything, but not helping either. Ed Fair

first off, THANKS for you reply
i would think they were put there for a reason, most of the commands are windows related. i am sure this computer is still set-up as it came out of the box..
there just has to be something to these commands

as i said this thing just ran good for what it was and resources avail. 59% free, i see problems when i get to 70% or lower.

i'm working on reading a+ passport and that talks about the use of himem, but i guesse it didn't stick. i already know i'll have to read it twice if not more before i take the test...

thanks for your reply's

Those lines that are written in Config.sys file are irrelevant. I run Win98 and my unit runs very well. Those commands refer to MS DOS and in the early days of windows 95, improved perfomance but they are of no value now and you would do well not to worry about them. The perfomance of your computer is mainly dependant on the amount of RAM, the size of the Hardrive and the type of processor you have. To alter your machine to incorporate somebody elses settings is a dangerous game. Forget it!

THANK for the reply's..i geuss i will leave well enough alone.i was realy just curious though..like why the switchs behind the command line and then referance to 2meg

again thanks for the reply's

All those lines (except the "essolo" one), are remnants of an old DOS 6.x install. Windows 98 and above will ignore them if they can't be processed anyhow.
The essolo line refers to his sound card DOS drivers. Cheers,
Jim

Windows 98 SE doesn't need the config.sys or autoexec.bat files unless you have a particular device that specifically needs it. Config.sys pertains to device settings and things of that nature, but since for the most part Windows 98 is plug and play you really don't need config.sys for those devices anymore Windows will handle them.

Dear ifix1,
The settings you mention are used when the computer is set to run in msdos mode, you can add similar ones to your computer depending on the hardware you have installed.
For Windows only you don't need them.
