Hi

We need to do file transfers between two parts of our network that are separated by a firewall. At this time, we have an IIS FTP server running on one part and are transferring files with WS_FTP running at the other side.

However, now we must get rid of the "simple" FTP server as it is not secure enough. Several options have come through my mind (SSH server, secure FTP) but I'm not sure how to start with any of these. On top, I can't afford licenses for expensive SFTP servers.

Is there someone having experience with secure file transfers over a firewall or with secure FTP that can give a tip?

Thanks,
Tim

I have succesfully used War-FTP for some time now. I disabled IIS FTP quite a while ago and am very happy with War.

It takes a little cnfiguring but is well worthwhile and it's freeware [colorface]

Thanks, it looks like a fine FTP suite indeed. I will check it out, but at first sight it looks like this FTP server is not secure either. At least that's what is mentioned in the FAQ..

IIS FTP has been working fine (and still is), but security is the reason why it needs to be removed. Any kind of secure file transfer will do, but we need to get it up asap and file transfers must be able to run unattended (scheduled)..

tvbruwae,

I would look into the open ssh suite for win32 available at
That will have the ssh/sftp server along with clients for win32. You can use all of the tools unattended as long as you configure shared public/private key pairs on your clients and your servers.

I've done this on win32 with a larger package called Cygwin and it works well. This will be a bit more lightweight way of doing the same thing.

my 2 cents: Do not run ftp on the default port 21
