Hello Folks,
we have a norstar phone system here, with 4 digit DNs. my boss asked me to run a fax line to a certain cubicle, i tried to mirror the settings from other fax machine that are setup but no luck. I talked to the admin that was here in the past and he mentioned that i have to tie the fax number somehow with the DN extension. i can't find anything on that in the manaul i have.
currently there are 3 fax machines that send/receive however the DNs that these machines are connected to are different from the fax number, how are they connected that's what i'm trying to figure out.
and also why is it when i plug a fax machine to a working DN extension i get no dial tone, and when i plug a phone to one of the DNs that service to fax machines, the phone is dead.

Please help, as i found nothing on the web, the documentation talks about Fax overflow mailboxes and fax on demand which i don't think is what i need to set up.

thanks in advance.

Faxes are analog and the telephones are TDM (digital). You need an ATA or and ASM to get a fax to work on the MICS 6.1. Your fax#'s are probably part of a DID range. You build a Target Line and assign it to a DN.

translations for you:
ATA - Analog Terminal Adapter: plug in a digital station cord into one side and get plain old telephone dialtone (that a fax can use) out.
ASM - Analog Station Module: a bank of 8 analog adapters built into a module that hangs in the phone room and gives you 8 analog/Plain old telephone dialtone.
DID - Direct Inward Dial: a list or range of numbers that when dialed deliver the callers telephone call to your phone system. your telephone system has to be programmed with the information of what station or DN to send the call to.
DN - Directory Number: a number that designates stations on your phone system. also called the intercom number.

Thanks for the elaboration jerry. I'm an old-school hunt and peck typer, the less words the better. When I was in school the only reason to take typing was for the chicks. Who knew PCs were coming.

Plus, dreamer used an acronym first.
