I noticed this morning that the tape did not eject after a backup, so I tried to logon to the machine. The logon stopped and all I have is screen with my mouse curser that I can move and ctrl alt delete does not work. Employees can't connect to printers, but the mail server is still working. I am able to connect to the event viewer. I don't want to just turn the server off. Any and all help please.

The only strange error in event viewer is ID:9. Which translates to Soure: adpu160m, the device,\scsi\adpu160m2 did not respond.

The important thing is to find out which device that is.

Its connected to your scsi controller. Possibly a tape drive.

Unfortunately, you may just have to reboot but you should begin troubleshooting that error. May just be a one time thing, possible bad scsi controller or bad device. I had that event 9 errors come up before and it turned out to be a precurser to my harddrive getting ready to die. As I said, its important to find out what that device is.

I am suspecting that the tape device is the culprit.

According to HP the power will just be killed. However, I am not sure if the tech knew what he was talking about.
Does anyone know? Proliant 350ml g3.

try to termianl into the server and do a restart and then touble shoot the tape backup

What is stopping you from killing power and rebooting the server. If nothing else will work its your only choice.

This server host the mail and people are here working. I will kill the power after 5pm. I hope hard-rebooting does not mess with the file system.
