I am not a professional but, I am trying to install a Sony Rewriteable drive to an XP computer for a friend. Her existing dvd/cd drive is the master and I installed her Sony as the Slave. The new drive is recognized and it can read the cd's. But, when I try to play a CD in the new drive, the sound is muffled and slow and then it corrects itself. When I tried to burn a CD, the CD did burn but, the sound came out the same on the CD, muffled and slow. I then went to my computer at home to see how I connected mine. I noticed when I installed my Rewriteable, I have a CD Audio Adder connected from my regular CD drive and Rewriteable to the mother board. Do I always need a CD Audio Adder???? I really do not remember if it came with anyhing or if I bought it.

No, it is not necessare to have the audio drive, but it is faster.

Make sure you have the latest drivers from the Mfg. of the new drive. Also, make sure the software you use to write does not have issues with the new drive.

Even though it is new, there may already be new drivers or firmware.

Thanks, I DL the drivers and it worked. However, a story comes out of this. I started to burn a disc and it prompted me to pick a drive. So, I got curious and tried to burn a CD with the existing drive that came with the computer.....and it was successful. She already had a combination CD-rewritable/dvd drive. So, basically the drive I installed is just another rewriter, that she really does not need. So, I am uninstalling the drive I put in and taking it back for her to get some other tech item.

You might check if the new drive can burn a DVD. It is unlikely the older one can.
