Restoring Outlook Express 5 data files

I have reinstalled Windows 95 and recovered Outlook Express version 5 folder files (extensions .dbx , etc).

Outlook Express crashes or ignores these files.
How do I recover these files?
Surely Microsoft must have allowed for the situation of restoring data files to a reinstalled system (haven't they?)

I've just seen a recent thread addressing this problem with a link to a solution.

I just can't believe that Microsoft could be so unintelligent (stupid?) as not to provide a backup for OE files considering the obscure registry based system they chose to use.
