I have a Cisco 7960 ip phone that has been configured with a password. I would like to reset the phone to its default configuration. After searching for the forums, I coudn't find any solution. Does anyone know how to reset the 7960 phone to its initial configuration or bypass the configuration password. Thanks in advance.

Configured with a password?...hmmm When exactly does the password screen display (is it preventing you from using the phone at all)? This is a new one to me...

The phone has already been configured with a user name, proxy address, proxy port..etc because it's a used phone. I need to reconfigured this phone for a new user. The password promts in the "SETTINGS" menu under option "9 Unlock config". Basically I just want the configuration to be set to the factory default. Thanks

On a 7960...running the latest load...under the settings menu...I don't have an option 9 Unlock config. Mine only goes up to option six (Security Configuration).

To unlock the Network Configuration and reset to factory, the Cisco method is to hit the Settings button, press **#, and that unlocks the Network config. Then, select option 3 (Network Configuration), then scroll down to option 33 (Erase Configuration), and select Yes. This should reset the phone back to factory default.

Let me know if this works for you.

I've tried **# in the settings menu but to no avail. I think my phone is running a different load than yours. My settings options go all the way till 9, and my option 6 is not Security Configuration like yours. By the way, this is a 7960G, I don't know if that makes any difference. Here's some information about the load.
The Application Load ID is POS3-06-3-00.
The Bood Load ID is PC030301.
The DSP Load ID is PS03AT38.

Thank you for your inputs.

Nah, it doesn't matter. We have both 7960's and 7960G's - the G just stands for Global.

It sounds like it's running the wrong load, or a modified load that someone created. The load for my 7960G's is: P00307020200. This is off a system running CCM; I have no idea if CCME has different loads for the same model phones.

When I pull up my app load ID under Model Information, it actually says P00307020200.

Have you tried updating the load for your phone? Are you running CallManager (servers) or CallManager Express (router module)? If you're running CallManager, you can download the load I mentioned above for your 7960, put it on your TFTP server, and update the load for that individual phone via the CCMAdmin Phone Device page.

Oh wait a sec. Is this a SIP phone (I bet that's what the S stands for in the app load ID)? Never worked with those. Probably the right load then, and why I don't recognize all the options you're saying it has...

Try this first:

And see if the password suggestion works. There's another post on Tek Tips forum for converting a phone from SIP to SCCP (skinny, which is what callmanager uses), if that's what you need to do to reset the image...the link to that documentation is actually provided in the link I posted above.

Thanks for the help. I looked through your link and stumbled upon a pdf file that was informative. It seems like you have to download the default configuration file from cisco.com and uploaded to the phone in order to restore the phone to it's initial config. Too bad I don't have a CCO account to do so. Totally appreciate your help!

I've got my hand on another 7960 phone with load P00307000200. I want to upload the firmware on this phone to a TFTP server and download it to my other phone that needs a configuration reset. This is the first time I've ever work with IP phone, could you explain to me how this is done, or point me to a link. Thanks

No problem - what you would normally do is download the SCCP phone load files from Cisco (CCO Login) - either the *.exe file that puts them on automatically or you can download the individual *.bin files and throw them in the \TFTPPath\ directory on the TFTP server yourself. The *.exe is easier; you just download it, run it on the TFTP server only, and then reset the phone (or the TFTP service).

HOWEVER:

If you have a phone that is currently hooked up to your CallManager system running load P00307000200, and the phone says that's the load it's running, then it should already be on your TFTP server. The trick is to get that SIP phone to pull the SCCP load off the TFTP server instead of the SIP load. These two phones are on the same CallManager cluster, then?

I'm almost positive that you'll need to do this:

I have no experience with SIP phones whatsoever, so that would be the best place to start.

Like I said, if you have another 7960 running the SCCP load, then the SCCP load is already on the TFTP server. Could you give me more info on how you're set up?
