Removing entries from registry

Hi,

I recently replaced a tape drive in an NT 4 SP6a server. New tape drive is installed and working great.

Problem is that the server is still trying to load some drivers or something for the old tape drive. I get an error message that a service failed to start on startup. Please check the event log. When I check the event log, I have an error that always references unable to load something for QIC117 (ie. my old tape drive).

I decided (after backing up my registry) to take out all the entries in the registry dealing with QIC117. However, it would not allow me to take some of them out. Said they were in use.

I saw in another post that there is not "Safe Mode" in Windows NT 4 server. The suggestion was to install a dual boot system ... then edit the first registry. This system is so small, I do not want to do that ... or spend that amount of time for a frivolous error.

Is there any way I can get this error to stop? Editing the registry a different way? Some other program to stop it drivers from loading?

Thanks.

Dale

Try this:

1) stop the back-up service via the module "services" in control panel. There could be multiple services running!

2) user regedit to remove all references to the tapedrive

dutch62,

Thank you for your response!

I thought that would do the trick. I went into "services" in the control panel, and stopped EVERYTHING that it would allow me to. Unfortunately, with the same result. It says "Error deleting key" ... and never deletes the key.

Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Thanks.

Dale

Hi Wolluf,

Man you are everywhere. Thank you for being so active in these discussion forums.

I tried your advice of going into devices as well. Shut down as many devices as possible in conjuction with the services ... but had the same result.

This is simply an annoyance ... everything seems to be working fine. So if I can't figure it out, it's not a big deal.

Thank you again for responding!

Dale
