Hello all,

My Problem is this:

How can I have an IP Deskphone at a workers home and have it work as a SIP Extension.

Before you ask One-X is not a viable solution (even if it's the only solution...)

My Setup:

IPO 500 v2
Avaya Combo Card (Dig Sta x6, Analogue x2, ATM4/U)
Avaya Dig Sta 8
VCM 64
UC Module v1 (running Voicemail Pro, One-X not working because of Database Corruption)
49 x 1120e, 1140e IP Deskphones w/ SIP 4.04.14.xx firmware
2 x B179 Conference Phones
6 x Dig Sta

52 Avaya IP Endpoint Lic
10 SIP Trunk Lic
**EDIT - 10 Teleworker Licenses (+4 Remote Workers with Essential...)
Essential Edition
Virtual Pref with UC Module

Everything works when placing calls etc in the Local Network

LAN1 - Local Data LAN
Register SIP
Allow Remote SIP Ext
SIP Trunks Enabled
<open Internet Firewall Config>
LAN2 - Subnet connected to LEVEL3 ITSP Router
SIP Trunks Enabled
<no firewall config>

Current call Routing from inside

SIP IP Phone (Avaya Nortel 11xx Series 1120e,1140e w/ 4.04.14 SIP Software)
-> LAN1 <Register, TFTP Download Config> (SIP Gateway, SIP Register, SIP Trunks (checked))
-> LAN2 <SIP Trunks> configured on subnet with Level3 Premise Device
-> Call Placed "N"@192.168.43.2 - the Presence equipment IP

Procedures i've tried so far. After extensively mining the Internet and Here (and going nuts :) ).

RTP - RTCP directly to the IPO via opening ports in the firewall (not recommended i know, but i need something to work at the moment)
IPO Reports foreign to the LAN and wont register
VPN (IPSEC) setup site to site to route all traffic to the Office Network
Haven't been able to get this to work yet. IPO not pingable across the VPN. Not registering SIP ext

Things left to try:
96xx VPN to SIP extension (read that this is very basic (no buttons))
96xx VPN to H.323 (will this work with SIP Trunks?
OpenVPN SSL-VPN to OpenVPN Server ???? with SIP Extension behind it (I've heard that the call quality can be okay on an SSL-VPN)
Purchase an SBCE (I'm not even sure what this entails (port-cadwell device with SBCE Software and Licensing (can't even get a real price on this))
This would be for Remote SIP Extensions

Help.
Thanks in advance
will give more info if needed

If you setup a site to site VPN you need to add an IP route to the system telling it how to reach the far end, if it's not pingable then you don't have one, add one and it should work fine (assuming you have everything else correct) :-)

Why are you so hung up on using the device as a SIP extension on the system?

An H323 VPN phone at a home would be able to dial out SIP trunks on the system if that's what you've got from your provider.

I assume because he has ex Nortel handsets that only run SIP on IP Office :-)

Thank You Kyle

I am just trying to get some phones working immediately so home workers can have a phone.

That was the info i was looking for. It's all very cryptic on Avaya's part...

So i should be able to connect a 9620 H.323 with the VPN firmware to the IP Office and have a working extension that can be fully functional...

Just to be certain. I'll need:

9620 H.323 w/ VPN Firmware
46xxsettings.txt file on the Server (for VPN Config)

???

Avaya will not tell you in a document what type of handset is required to use each type of line as it's irrelevant information, any line on any system can be used with any type of handset, that's the whole point of a telephone system.

If you have a site to site VPN, that's better than running VPN phones anyway. A handset on a VPN either self or router generated is fully functional yes :-)

Thanks amriddle01

For me it's a matter of how much equipment i have to give to those users.

It'd be great to only give them a phone (and a POE injector) and send them on their way.

I have no prob with the Site to Site VPN Setup though. I purchased some commodity home routers with VPN and am using them for the immediate future.

I'm just having a mental block then about the SIP/H.323/Digital Phone setup because i've been having problems getting the Digital Stations to dial out using the 9N code setup for dialing the SIP Trunk.

I'll have to get the site to site working first anyway because there are people with phone needs that are immediate.

So as you said i need to add an IP Route in the IPO for the Site to Site VPN network.

How i have it setup now is:

Remote Worker Site:
192.168.188.x

IPO Internal Network:
192.168.42.x

Remote Worker Phone (DHCP Local, IPO Network S1 address, IPO Network Prov Serv Addr)
-> VPN Router Remote Worker Local
-> Sonicwall NSA (Site to Site VPN)
IPO (Need to setup IP Route to Remote Worker Subnet)

So I'll need to do this individually for each remote worker could you give me an idea what the IP Route would look like

something like?

IP Address = 192.168.188.0
IP Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP = IPO side VPN Server Gateway IP or Remote Worker side VPN Gateway IP?
Metric = 0

Guess i answered my question by trying it.

I have
IP Address = 192.168.188.0
IP Mask = 255x3.0
Gateway IP = IPO side VPN Server Gateway IP
Metric = 0

workable???

If the digital phones can't dial out SIP it's because your shortcodes are dialling to the SIP trunk before they have dialled the full number, you will not have seen this issue with the Nortel phones as they are also SIP, so they force you to dial the full number before passing it to the system.

You need to adjust your shortcodes for using SIP trunks :-)
