Vista is supposed to have made remote assistance easier with support for Nat devices. I have been trying to offer remote assistance between two computers one behind a Dlink router and mine behind a Linksys router.
I have port forwarded on both routers and when i edit the RA tickety i noticed that it uses a completely different port than the usual 3389.
The first ticket sent to me used 50100 the next 48900. I port forwarded both on the two routers (at least the person behind the Dlink says he did it as per my directions on the phone).
Shut off all firewalls and still no connection. They switched to dialup and no issues but when behind the router on his end no connection.

Downloaded and tried Radmin 3.0 and it worked ok, but not really a workaround unless of course i buy a multi user licence.

Any pointers on what i might be missing?

Tried live messenger as well and no it would not work either Unable to establish connection for some errors and most were that it appeared as if the remote computer did not have remote assistance running. However on the remote computer remote assistance showed as waiting on the connection.

The error message: Either Remote Assistance is unable to find the remote computer or you do not have permission to connect to the remote computer. Verify that the computer name and permissions are correct, and then try again

The person you are trying to help might have closed Remote Assistance. has been shown to the user

These are the two messages shown in the event viewer.

Using the same invite when he uses dialup we immediately connect.

Looking at the two posted links the service is started and is enabled. However looking at the postings in the one it states that the RA ticket will show the outside IP address which it does not it shows the inside IP (router assigned).

I edited the RA ticket and set it to his outside IP address but that did not help.I then tried to edit the port number as well and set it to port 3389 from 50100 no go there either.

I was half assuming it was a firewall issue but the same things were running on both computers on dialup and it all worked. ( i had disabled all firewalls on both machines and even moved both machines into the DMZ on both routers.

The first two invites were by email the last by live messenger.

Can you identify which machine is the problem. On your own machine do you have problems connecting Remotely with other machines?

Is there any way the other machine can bypass or use a different Router. Can the D-Link Router benefit from any Reset, or is there even any Firmware upgrade available?

What was the underlying problem with this other machine that made you want to remotely connect in the first place?

"I was able to establish a Remote Desktop Connection successfully from another computer on my network, so I suspected that there might be a port being blocked by the D-Link firewall" Just a quote I came across on the Web. I can only guess that this Router or its settings are the main problem, like I said, it is only a guess.

i assume my router and setup are OK because i can connect when he is on dialup. I assume it is his dlink but figured it would allow traffic when the PC there was in the DMZ.

He had changed motherboards and CPU and the shop that did it did a fresh install and did not setup his printer or migrate his .pst file to the new install.

The printer was setup on a synology backup device with built in USB print server, and the PST file was on a seperate drive.

Vista does not allow you to just view the files you need to take ownership or add the new user in the permissions much like XP but slower and more complicated.

They connect using a wireless connection through an ethernet convertor so did not want to try walking him through it over the phone (get enough of that at work).

I assume it has to be an issue with the dlink was wondering if anyone had run across the same issue and found what is different on either a dlink or Vista that would cause the connection issue.

I have been having the same problem, with little relief. My mother has a DI-624 and I have been unsuccessful in establishing Vista remote assistance through the router. Without the router everything works correctly. I have opened port 3389 and changed the RA ticket to match. It seems the router will not pass the request. I have the same problem with Live Messenger. As you pointed out, the RA ticket does not point to port 3389. I was wondering if you were able to resolve this issue.

Thanks for your help!

(By the way my mother is 65 and I feel terrible having her make all these system changes. This is her first computer, hence the need for Remote Assistance.)

I have not had the chance to really work on it, the computer i was trying to assist i managed to fix when the dlink was bypassed. It is funny that i could remote manage the router but it would not pass the remote assistance request.
I was almost thinking of contacting dlink support themselves to see if they have a workaround for it.
I know the linksys i use is ok because i can use remote assistance for other computers.

Cousin, Did you get the remote assistance working? I'm in the same boat, my mum is running Vista and i need to remote to her (bit scary as the anti-virus is currently not working!)..

I opened/forwarded the router's 3389 port on her system but to no avail (was trying via IM, but giving up on that lol).

Vectis,

Are you Offering Remote Assistance, or is "Mum" Requesting Remote Assistance? Does it fail in both scenarios?

I was accepting remote assistance request from the computer behind the dlink. I never did get another chance to try the assistance again i instead fixed the issue by bypassing the router totally and using a dialup connection.
I had tried even moving the computer into the DMZ looking at the request and forwarding the ports listed in the invite on both routers. It is very strange as i can remote manage the router in question. I have been able to do remote assistance through a netgear router without issues.

Hmmm!
I don't use the native remote except on my network. I run an XP machine with 2 monitors and run the Vista remote on the second monitor (the Vista machine is a Laptop running Ultimate)

I personally find the Windows software lacking in ease of use

Routers and firewall’s are some of the issues….location is another. The IP address can really mess things up
First to make things easier use a website like DynDNS for your web IP address

Then use a remote control program and/or assistance program
Here are some links:

I use an expensive program called remotely anywhere…it is one of the best out there

I forgot to add:
If you are using any MS OS before Vista to connect. You should go to the Windows Update site and download the remote upgrade....I don't have the exact name of it....LOL
